MANATHOL, a.k.a. Manabu Richard Nagao, is an abstract electronica/hip-hop beat-maker, born in 1975 to a Latin-American R&B drummer father and Taiko drummer mother.
After falling in love with the beats and scratches of hip-hop, he began DJing in 1994, and fuelled by this initial impulse was vigorously active on the Tokyo live circuit. In 1995 he began making tracks using an MPC2000, and his tape-only EP, monologue, released in 1999, was a big underground hit.
MANATHOL gained even more respect on the underground scene after featuring on Meikyo Shisui's concept album "Kyogen", both under the name MANATHOL, and together with Jody Tenpool as part of GROUND REVERSE, who in 2001 released a 12" single and full album. He was also front DJ at the now-legendary Audio Active-organized HAPPERS ALL STARS event held in Yoyogi Park.
In early 2004, he founded multipurpose independent label BWUGUNG. He has also done remix and mastering work for many artists, such as Ao Inoue (Dry & Heavy), cutsigh a.k.a KASAI (Audio Active), and Bazillus KF. In 2008 he formed the electro unit "pull out" with Shizuoka-based genius and Hyde Out Pro. signee Jemapur.
MANATHOL has a complex, multifaceted and wide-ranging taste in music, and a natural impulse to create it; a true beat addict, creating his own musical interpretations of the world through an extract-disassemble-reassemble-reinput process, and striving to realise and express the full potential of dance music.
