Manual Scan was formed in the early 1980s in San Diego, CA. The first lineup consisted of Bart Mendoza on vocals and guitar, Kevin Ring (later Kevin Donaker-Ring) on guitar and vocals, David Fleminger on bass, and Paul Kaufman on drums. Througout several lineups, the core of Mendoza and Ring remained, and Manual Scan was one of the premiere Mod bands of the US in the 1980s. Releasing a string of singles beginning in 1981 and an album issued in both the U.S. and England in 1986, the band toured extensively throughout Califormia and Arizona as well as England (The 100 Club & The Marquee amongst other venues) and Mexico. Mendoza and Ring are now members of The Shambles (who are also on MySpace at MySpace.com/TheShambles) along with Mark Z, formerly of the legendary San Diego band The Crawdaddies.Early in 2006, Manual Scan reunited (Mendoza, Donaker-Ring, Smith, and Young) for a special show. The reunion went so well that the four have since played several more shows, and it seems that Manual Scan may once again be a force to be reckoned with!.
A number of Manual Scan's recordings are available today: Manual Scan's U.S. "Best of" Compilation, All Night Stand, is available from Get Hip Records (www.gethip.com) as is the "Lost Sessions" vinyl EP. (FYI: The band also has a "Best of" issued in Spain by Snap Records, Plan of Action. This actually has different songs and a different cover) In Nov 2006, Spain's Munster Records re-issued Manual Scan's ultra rare Plan of Action 7" vinyl EP as part of thier Collector's Club series!!.Numerous bands from around the world have covered the bands songs, including The Eddies ("Jungle Beat"), Afterglow ("Of Heart & Soul"), Mod Fun ("Nothing Can Be Everything"), Anna Troy ("31968"), The Kingpins ("Plan of Action"), Anthony Meynell & Sugarplum ("Confidence & Love") and Static Halo ("American Way"). Work has begun compiling footage for a possible DVD- if you have photos or film of the band, we'd love to hear from you.
~ If you can't make this one, stop by to see me perform at ArtWalk 2008 in Little Italy on Saturday from 2:30pm - 3:30pm. I'll be at Stage 3 at India and Cedar!
Thanks for the add, Manual Scan! I grew up in Chula Vista and I used to talk to Bart when he worked at Licorice Pizza. I went on to have my own "mod" band at Purdue, the Rocket Pops. Good times, good times...
