Matt Marantz is a saxophonist who lives in New York City and works as a freelance jazz musician. He moved to New York to study at the Manhattan School of Music in 2004 with the likes of teachers such as Garry Dial, Bob Mintzer, John Riley, and Steve Wilson. He now holds a bachelor’s degree in jazz performance on saxophone from that institution.
During his career, Marantz has played with jazz notables such as Dave Brubeck, Christian McBride, Roy Hargrove, Kurt Elling, Chris Potter, Branford Marsalis, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Ingrid Jensen, Frank LoCrasto, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and Jonathan Batiste. He has performed with various groups at musical venues such as the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., The White House in Washington D.C., The Toledo Jazz Festival, the Monterey Jazz Festival, Jazz Fest in New Orleans, the Detroit Jazz Festival, the Friehofer’s Jazz Festival, the Strathmore Music Festival, the New Hampshire Music Festival, and the 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2008 IAJE conferences. Marantz has also performed at New York City music venues such as Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Cachaca, 55bar, and the Garage.
During his music education career, Marantz has been recognized multiple times in the Downbeat Student Music Awards issue and has won a total of 26 awards from that publication. Matt was named top jazz soloist for four years in a row by Downbeat and was named the co-winner for the top jazz soloist award in 2006 for university level.
