For right now, it's just myself. Though often others join me!
Influences
I actually have spent most of my life not listening to much music, except the music my parents made! So they are probably my biggest influences. Through my mom, I was enthralled with Elvis, and managed to dress like him for a year in elementary school. Within the last 6 years I have been moved by contemporary African and Latino beats, many Bluegrass artists, Gospel, Jazz standards, and sound artists. I am really influenced by the conversations I have with loved ones and strangers alike, and what I hear in my daily life. I really just listen to all of my musical comrades explore their sounds and styles, and grow with them and from them.
Sounds Like
Virginia Rodrigues, Sarah Vaughn, Bjork...to name (really) just a few.
I edited my profile with Thomas Myspace Editor V4.4 (www.strikefile.com/myspace)
I pull from a lot of traditions and styles to push my sound further.
What People have said about my sound:
"Her songs come from a true desire to bring her audiences closer to themselves, to get something to happen, to move people into an awareness of the moment and their experience." Steven Williams
"Haunting"....
"Meghan Yates is like nothing you or anyone anywhere has ever heard. She is a classic original voice in the sense that Billie or Sarah or Lena had classic, original voices. I never got to hear Billie or Sarah or Lena live, but I have listened to Meghan Yates. and therefore I have gotten goosebumps hearing them all roll gloriously back at me.. all at once.. from one voice. American music will be reminded through Meghan of its true history and purpose, and its about damn time. " Frank Hopkins
"Check out Meghan Yates. She has an incredible voice - it is powerful and unusual. We were print majors together @ MECA. I first heard her singing voice one day in the print shop, back in 2004. She was singing while working in the adjoining room, and I had to go look and see who was making such gorgeous sounds. I said, "Wow, Meghan you have a beautiful voice!" She just smiled. Meghan sang at the 2005 MECA commencement, and blew everyone's socks off. She is singing down in Providence these days. If you are in that area, go see her. She's really special!" Martha Miller
heard a rumor..a little bird whispered (meghan is in the city) and then I wondered if I missed my chance to say hello and look upon the face of one of my favorite missing people.. I still love you
