The LANES are singer/songwriters Mike Lane and Kiki Lane (formerly Klein), together with drummer Dave Russ, bassist Kris Bowring and vocalist Jenny Russ............
MIKE LANE's songwriting and guitar-playing have earned him accolades from Baltimore (his hometown) to New Zealand.
Following the demise of Sunday Cannons, a mainstay of the Baltimore/Washington, DC post.punk scene, Lane moved to Minneapolis and dedicated himself to writing the best songs of his life. ...........
For a time, he played with his lo-fi combo, the Very Idea, until deciding to concentrate on getting the sounds he heard in his head out to the world via those wonderful, shiny compact discs..............
Finding a like-minded collaborator in Jay Krasnow, the two took a batch of Lane's tunes, rounded up sympathetic musicians, and made the amazing Good Luck with Electricity in 1998. ..............
The CD received airplay in 12 countries and sat in the Canadian College Top 30 for several weeks.
It garnered support from nearly 100 college and community radio stations.....
And then came Starshine. Once again, the Lane/Krasnow team co-produced a fabulous set of songs showcasing the many moods of Mike Lane, while featuring Michael Severens ..o more prominently throughout. Again, the CD gathered its share of admirers across the USA and beyond. Lane, Krasnow and Severens undertook an east coast tour in spring, 2000 to promote the Starshine EP...............
At the end of the millenium, the re-mastered Heston Haiku made its first appearance on CD. Originally issued as a cassette in 1995, Heston Haiku's spare instrumentation and big rock sound offer an interesting contrast to the lush recordings that followed. Many of the songs remain staples of any Mike Lane concert. The disc also contains four bonus tracks not found on the cassette. ...........
Mike Lane took a long break from music in order to travel and write. He hit upon the idea of having artists that he'd meet in his travels record his songs for his next CD. He would produce and arrange. The result is '5 Acts to Follow': which, despite its mongrel pedigree, is perhaps Lane's most consistent CD yet. ...............
Pop artists from Alaska (the PoppyOtts), Costa Rica (Migraine Tambien), France (Blu Montag), and the globetrotting Manny Sanguillen 7, as well as the close-to-home Kiki Klein, contribute their talents. Lane's quirky, yet honest songwriting shines throughout the collection, and the international cast lend an appealing variety to the sound of his songs. He and co-producer Dave Russ also tapped local talents to embellish the tracks, including Randy Casey (guitar), Jessy Greene (viola), Michael Severens and Margaret Hegg (cellos)............
Kiki Klein is a Minneapolis-based singer/songwriter whose passion for singing and great pop hooks is crystal clear on her debut CD, Out of a Crowd.
She grew up in Rochester, Minnesota, and from a very early age sang with her older siblings, learning the secrets of harmony and the joyous grooves of classic pop music. In her twenties, she began performing with rhythm and blues bands, forging her strong and soulful voice over years of club and wedding gigs. .............
Kiki moved to the Twin Cities in 1986, and again performed with various R&B bands for several years. But the call of that classic pop music she had first gleamed from her transistor radio and earphone as a kid beckoned. She rekindled a love for the music of the Beatles, Hollies and Kinks (and gained an appreciation for newer works by the Pretenders and XTC), picked up her guitar, and began writing songs...................
Fusing elements of classic British pop and the R&B she had cut her teeth on as a singer, Kiki developed her own style, and soon formed the band Union Jack to showcase her new songs. In 1998, she recorded her first disc, Out of a Crowd, a 13-song collection that ranged from the gentle "Next Big Thing", to the stomping title track, to the very Beatle-esque "No". .............
Kiki Klein and Mike Lane joined forces as singer/songwriters (having already become a couple) to play a set (with Beatifics Chris Dorn and Andy Schultz on drums and bass) at Chicago's International Pop Overthrow, calling themselves 'Kiki's House/Mike's Party'. They soon began writing songs together, and enlisting players to help create a classic pop band sound. Dave Russ and Kris Bowring (Cultivators) comprise the rhythm section, while Jenny Fraser adds harmonies. The five produce a lush, jangly pop sound that captivates with its tunefulness and spirit. ................
Kiki and Mike were married September 30, 2006. It was fellow songwriter Dan Sarka (Vandalias, Stingray Green) who suggested they bill themselves musically as 'the LANES'. And now, they do.
Their song "Scarlet Chapeau" appeared on Volume 10 of the International Pop Overthrow compilation CD in 2007.
The LANES have begun recording songs for Kiki's next solo disc .

Ever wondered what to do in the event of a nuclear threat?
A while ago I found stuff that inspired me to make this film:

Both artistic (ensure you get the background music!) and educational, it primarily comprises official British government civil defence advice.
Though source materials are quite aged, much remains relevant today.
