1979年秋田に生まれ、九州、京都育ち。
アマリア・ロドリゲスに衝撃を受け、リスボンにて本場のファドを習得すると同時に、ブラジル、ポルトガル語圏アフリカまで音楽世界を広げる。
2004年に、大西洋の諸島国カーボ・ヴェルデに歌手として滞在。 同年、ブラジル、ミナス・ジェライス州の音楽祭にポルトガル代表グループのヴォーカリストとして出演。以後、リオ・デ・ジャネイロにて、ポルトガル、ブラジル、カーボ・ヴェルデ をつなぐ大西洋の歌を綴った1stアルバム『アトランティカ』をレコーディング（2005年ビクターよりリリース) 。プロデューサーのホジェリオ・ソウザと兄であるバンドリン奏者ホナウド・ド・バンドリンを招き、大阪、東京にてデビューコンサートを行った。
2006年にはブラジル北東部のリズムと物語をちりばめた2ndアルバム『ピタンガ！』を同じくビクターよりリリース。この作品で作詞作曲家としての才能を見事開花させた。
2007年3月より、再びブラジル、アルゼンチンを巡る。リオ・デ・ジャネイロで日本とブラジルの叙情歌を歌う3rdアルバム『アザス』をレコーディング (オーマガトキよりリリース)。発売後の2007年秋には同作を共同プロデュースしたブラジル音楽の巨匠ジョアン・リラ(g)を日本に迎え、全国ツアーを行った。
2008年5月には３枚のCDの集大成として、ブラジル移民100周年記念アルバム『ルアール』をビクターよりリリース。11月にはブラジルのレシフェにて記念コンサートも行う。
同年、ブラジルにてジョナサン・ノシター監督の新作映画に出演。
国内外でジャンルの枠を超え、かつ文化的ルーツをさぐりながら、様々なアーティストとコラボレーションを続けている。人と人、時間と時間、土地と土地をつなぐその歌声には彼女の旅する様々な地域の魂が宿っている。

Mio Matsuda começou a sua carreira musical ao descobrir o fado português e desenvolveu-o como forma de sua expressão. Em Lisboa permaneceu durante um ano e estudou fado em seu local de origem. Também aproximou-se do universo da Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa. Em 2004 Participou do Festival de Inverno do Estado de Minas Gerais, no Brasil, no evento “Na Ponta da Língua“, atuando como vocalista e representando Portugal.Permaneceu no arquipélago de Cabo Verde, África Ocidental,trabalhando como cantora.Desde esse período passou a centralizar as suas atividades no Brasil, gravando no Rio de Janeiro seu primeiro álbum, “Atlântica”(2005 JVC) cuja idéia nasceu de sua viagem transatlântica, e dos mistérios dos mares que banham Portugal, Brasil e Cabo Verde. Em 2006 lançou seu segundo álbum, “Pitanga!”(JVC),que inclui as suas próprias composições inspiradas nos ritmos e rituais do Nordeste do Brasil. Em 2007 gravou o seu terceiro album, “Asas”(produzido por João Lyra e Mio Matsuda) com Cristovão Bastos e João Lyra. Em outubro realizou uma turneé de lançamento do disco no Japão, com João Lyra.
Atualmente sendo uma intérprete importante da música dos países de língua portuguesa no Japão, também trabalha em parceria com artistas de várias regiões do mundo, atravessando os gêneros e idiomas. Seu timbre de voz peculiar, a interpretação autêntica e o modo de expressar o amor, reflete-se em seu canto doce que engloba os sentimentos que reuniu em suas inúmeras viagens por tantas terras diferentes.

Mio Matsuda began her singing career when she discovered fado, the magical traditional music of Portugal. Living in Lisbon and learning the culture, she developed fado as a form of her own self-expression. While studying fado in traditional Casa de fado (fado houses) in Lisbon, she became familiar with the music from the diasporas of Portuguese influenced countries.
In 2004, she traveled to Minas Gerais, Brazil, representing Portugal, to sing in the event called "Na Ponta da Língua," as a representative vocalist. In the same year, she was invited to sing for a month in the Cape Verde islands where she discovered the beauty of Creole music. Her trans-Atlantic musical experience led her to record her first album "Atlântica" (2005 JVC) in Rio de Janeiro. "Atlantica" united songs from the many Atlantic Ocean ports of Portugal, Cape Verde and Brazil, mixing the lovely sounds of these three highly musical countries.
In the following year, Mio recorded her second album “Pitanga!”(2006 JVC) in Rio de Janeiro. On "Pitanga," she recorded her own compositions inspired by the northeast Brazilian rhythms and rituals. Her voice mixed with the many instruments and musical styles of that highly musical area.
In 2007 she recorded her third album "Asas"(2007 Omagatoki) in Rio de Janeiro. On this brand new album,Cristovao Bastos(piano)and Joao Lyra(guitar), the two masters of Brazilian music have accompanied her Japanese and Brazilian songs of "Saudade",In October, she toured all over Japan with Joao Lyra.
While becoming an important figure in interpreting the music of Portuguese culture in Japan, Mio has sang with artists from all over the world, such as the already legendary Yamandú Costa (Brazil) and the inspired Jadranka Stojakovic (Bosnia-Herzegovina),Hugo Fattoruso(Urguai),Ricardo Sandoval (Venezuela), Giovanni Hidalgo1(Puerto Rico),Zakir Hussein(India),Yosuke Yamashita(Japan),Tamango(Guine Frances) and Kodo(Japan).
In 2009 she starts her new project with Jukai, 83year-old dancer of Japanese classical dance together with Abdou Bayefall and Mamadu Lo from Senegal. She participated in the new album of "Os Ritmistas" (Brazil). Also she is working on her new CD with Hugo Fattoruso.
Mio's unique singing style and sensibility reflects her colorful background and inspiring journeys.
