Mister and Sunbird are a leaky bucket of WOW! They play a wicked variety of music, raucous and tender, ranging from Swing, Latin, Bluegrass and Ska. With more BANG than POP they test the most hard-wearing soles on the most discerning of dance floors. While drawing from the days of prohibition and smoke-filled New Orleans Jazz dens, Mister and Sunbird take the roots of old and place on it a modern melodic twist, making it their own. . . . . . . .
The Perth-based band formed initially in Barcelona in 2007 as a duo. Scott Kociuruba and David Lawrence, the frontmen of the bands "Mister & the Near Mrs" and "Sunbird", combined as a busking act aimed at picking the pockets of European tourists with song. Armed with forged busking permits and an array of home-made instruments the pair created an alchemy so fabulous they decided to bring it on home to Perth. There, they united with band mates Jay, Charlie and Damian, in Mister and Sunbird's current incarnation as a five piece. . . . . . . . .
Mister and Sunbird wield a hefty arsenal more akin to a toolshed of rusty axes than a quiver of arrows. Baritone sax, banjo, vintage rhodes piano, ukelele, percussion, bass, flute and drums. Add two vocalists and an ever revolving line-up of guest hell-cats and you got one of the most exciting shows in town. . . . . . . . .
In 2009, Mister and Sunbird dazzled audiences at West coast Blues and Roots, Southbound and Australia's largest music showcase - Woodford Folk Festival. They also toured Europe and The East coast of Australia on the back of the release of their debut double-album
"Spirit Fingers", which has received airplay on JJJfm, JTV, RTRfm, Radio National, and ABC 720am. . . . . . . . . .
Mister and Sunbird are currently recording their second album due for release in November 2010. . . . . . . . .Its shaping up to be a beauty!
