About me:
WE TURNED ONE YEAR OLD IN MARCH!
A New York Times and New York magazine pick, Mixer is a monthly reading and music series, co-curated by Melissa Febos and Rebecca Keith, at Cakeshop. We feature established and emerging poets, fiction and nonfiction writers, and bands. Mixer is the third Wednesday of every month, (except when it's the second). To sign up for our low-impact mailing list, email us at mixernyc@yahoo.com.
On July 16 we'll be featuring Peter Markus, Pamela Ryder, and Victoria Redel and musical guest Bjorn Quenemoen
Come for the poetry, stay for the fiction. Come for the fiction, stay for the music. Come for the music, stay for the drinks. Come for the drinks, gorge yourself on cupcakes upstairs on the way out. Or maybe you'll be so content you'll never leave.
Wednesday, June 18, 7:00-9:00, Cakeshop, 152 Ludlow (bet. Rivington and Stanton), F, V to 2nd Ave., JMZ, F to Delancey
WHO GIVES PROPS TO MIXER?
Lauren Cerand at Maud Newton.com says:
"New reading series alert, and it sounds brilliant. Presented by 'Melissa Febos (writer of fiction and nonfiction) …[and]… Rebecca Keith (a poet). The facts are these: The reading is called MIXER, and is to be held …at Cakeshop (152 Ludlow St., between Stanton & Rivington). It is going to be a monthly gig, featuring a bunch of writers and a musical act. To kick the whole thing off will be: Nelly Reifler, Robert Lopez, Craig Teicher, Leslie Shipman, and the musical sounds of Cat Martino.' Highly recommended."
Elena Schilder at Flavorpill says:
"Hosted by Sarah Lawrence MFAs Rebecca Keith and Melissa Febos, music venue/record store/bakery Cake Shop's monthly reading series provides a quick pace — each edition features a little poetry, a little fiction, and a rock band or two — and a highly watchable crowd. This month (February), Amanda Stern and Nicole Steinberg (hosts of the popular Happy Ending and Earshot reading series, respectively) read alongside Spectacular Bird, a frequent guest whose sunny acoustic pop brings the evening to a head-bobbing close."
The L Magazine's Edith Zimmerman says:
"May 7, 2008: This month's MIXER reading series, combining good music and good literature, isn't messing around--they've got a Pulitzer winner, a MacArthur winner, a mostly unknown poet, and a band with that Pulitzer winner on guitar and percussion. Nice work, MIXER."
Galleycat says:
"At a LES Bar, Literary Styles Converge
Brooklyn [fiction writer] Syreeta McFadden chats with Nelly Reifler at Lower East Side performance space Cake Shop last Thursday during the inaugural night of Melissa Febos and Rebecca Keith's Mixer reading series, which brings together poetry, fiction and nonfiction in a single evening. Reifler shared the stage with Robert Lopez, Craig Teicher, and Leslie Shipman, along with a musical performance by Cat Martino. The next event in the series is scheduled for April 18 with a confirmed appearance by poet Vijay Seshadri."
Megan Gilbert at Zoom-in Online says:
"I love it when I unexpectedly hear an amazing band I've never hear before. Last night, I attended the well-attended second installation of Mixer, a new monthly reading series, at Cakeshop on the Lower East Side...After four readers, including the lively David Hollander and the writer of perfect poetry, Vijay Seshadri, The Chapin Sisters, all the way from Los Angeles, took the stage. And rocked it, old tyme style."
Williamsburg is Dead says:
"Tomorrow I will be checking out the Mixer at Cakeshop, a reading/music series that I have attended many times and have always thoroughly enjoyed."
