Natives of Chicago, these like-minded individuals previously shared the stage in many separate musical outfits before uniting to form Reverie in 2004, whom later changed their name to Model Stranger. Armed with textured melodrama, and primed in post adolescent angst, Model Stranger takes precedence in fusing their influences to create a true and original sound. The band is made up of lead singer/guitarist Stephen Francis, bassist Kevin James and currently drummer Vince Capraro. Former drummer and longtime friend Brad Elliott amicably parted ways with the band just after the name change, announcing to fans and wishing Model Stranger well on his Facebook page on December 1st, 2009. The trio is also occasionally joined on stage by Tom Miller (keys) and Aaron Hosek (guitar/vocals) of Chicago band Bullet Called Life.
The epitome of a DIY band, Model Stranger has worked the Midwest scene very diligently with success over the last 5 years. Model Stranger has performed at famous Chicago clubs such as the Metro, Double Door, and Cubby Bear and was also a featured band in Chicago’s 2007 Mobfest (chicagomobfest.com). While gaining a dedicated following in Chicago, Model Stranger have remained arduous to the road over the years. Embarking on several self-booked and self-funded semi-national tours in support of their records: “Sick of Seeing Stars” (2004), “shAkY comA” (2007), and “A Boy and His Crown” (2008), the trio has begun to make a name for itself in the Midwest.
They announced their name change on November 1st, 2009. Lead singer Stephen Francis had this to say about the name transition: “Although we have gained a devoted following and performed under the name Reverie for a decent amount of time we knew it was time to move on. First and foremost we are open to change and we are excited to present a new record. We are more confident and aware in who we are and what we are. We feel that we have outgrown the name and the music has changed so much that it wouldn’t be right to move on as Reverie. The way we see it, the future is wide open and Model Stranger is our new platform. As always… we are shedding skin.”
In November 2008 alongside Bullet Called Life and 7 other bands, Model Stranger formed “Chicago Noise Machine”, a musical collective hell bent on better promoting the city’s talented local musicians. After a sold out launch party at the Cubby Bear last year, Model Stranger and CNM hosted “I AM FEST” at the Congress Theater - a 25-band, 2-stage affair that saw a massive crowd of over 2800 people on June 13th, 2009.
Since I AM FEST, Model Stranger has been playing and touring nonstop, including shows at the Taste of Chicago and Chicagoland Speedway, a 15-show-in-16-day summer 2009 swing out to the East Coast and a swing down to Little Rock, AR.
Model Stranger has built its reputation primarily on its high energy live performances and the variety of its sonic influences. Their sound has drawn comparison to bands as diverse as The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Elliott Smith, Bright Eyes, Silverchair, Radiohead or Muse and has been spun on two of Chicago’s finest rock/alternative radio Stations; WXRT and Q101. WRLR, Fearless Radio, The Rock Deli, and Hostage Radio have also featured Model Stranger with interviews and spotlighting showcases. “Lunch With Brain” and “Morning Paper” individually appeared on back-to-back Windy City Records 07’-08’Compilations.
*Model Stranger performed and released music under the name Reverie from 2004 to 2008.
