Who is Maxi B.?
Growing up in the suburban neighborhood of steel valley, outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Maxi B. attributes her flair for good taste in eating to the melting pot she grew up in. Born of Yugoslavian and Hungarian descent, good cooking and eating has always been a way of life. Although her mother was a good cook and baker, she often found herself dipping into the pots of friends and neighbors who were Italian, Jewish, African American, Irish, polish, Russian and German.
By 1980, Maxi left her hometown and headed to Hollywood, CA with a one-way plane ticket, $50 and big dreams. It was only 10 weeks after her arrival in Hollywood that she was discovered by music icon, Rick James and asked to join R&B legendary singing group, The Mary Jane Girls. Rick had impeccable taste and Maxi was introduced to such things as sushi, oysters and Champagne. Through her travels all around the world, from greasy truck stops to the finest of hotels, Maxi expanded her horizons in dining. She sampled some of the most cultured and diverse dishes from London to New Orleans. She was often curious about the ingredients found in these delicious dishes and wasn’t afraid to ask question or make friends with the chefs. Retaining that information, she later practiced what they preached and her kitchen became therapy and relaxation after long seasons in the studio and on the road.
After a decade in the music business, Maxi gave birth to her son Christian, and the music industry as she had known it came to a screeching halt. She decided to trade in her black leather and lace for an apron and started a successful catering business in Hollywood. Her first celebrity clients were singer Johnny Gill and comedienne Sinbad. Cosby kid, Malcolm Jamal Warner and Eddie Griffin became fans when she was asked to cook for the cast of their hit show “Malcolm and Eddie.” Lenny Kravitz to The Jacksons has enjoyed her down home comfort style. Even former boss Rick James was a client. After 15 years of cooking for the Hollywood elite, she has decided to put all of her mouthwatering recipes in her first cook book “Champagne and Collard Greens.” Maxi will offer the best in beverages, soups, salads, appetizers, entrees, sides and deserts. Her recipes will inspire you, satisfy your taste buds and bring people closer together.
