If there is a band I know well it is Holger. In fact, I knew it before it even existed. I’ve known some of the guys since they were young; I mean, they’re still young, so I should say that I know then since they were even younger.
In the far away beginning of this millennium I was part of a band named Vurla. We searched a complex sound that was based on post-rock, underlined by experimentalism, improvisation and a love for kraut-rock. We met then three 16-year-old kids who, through their band named projeto:, also wanted to play post-rock. Of course we thought that was beautiful and adopted them. The three kids were Pedro, Pata and Arthur. Later their band grew and even had amongst its members Irina, who now plays in Garotas Suecas. And then they broke up.
Bands break up and new ones are born. For some time they toyed around with improvised folk music as a project named That’s All Folks, that recorded on playgrounds and laid the foundation of what is now Holger. That is how began what would be The Green Valley EP. I remember the Akron/Family show in São Paulo when Pata made me listen from his iPod – he always does that – to the demos of his new band Holger on the Hills. “Brand New T-Shirt”, looking like a hit, was already there. Fortunately, the hill part was soon to be discarded.
For a while the band played as a sextet: besides the three original members of projeto:, it had as members Rolla, Tché and Haddad, who left before The Green Valley recordings – this name, it is worth remembering, comes from the Vale Verde cachaça (a typical Brazilian spirit made of sugar cane), favourite of the guys and enjoyed by people like Will Oldham and Dan Deacon in collective tasting rituals at Genésio Bar (a very nice bar in São Paulo).
Despite the fact it is a moving record, The Green Valley, still based on the compositions and influences of its forerunner project, cannot do justice to the band's uncontrollable energy as their live performances do. These are unpredictable. The only constant is the smile on the members’ faces, who usually play anywhere, be it for half a dozen people at a hole in the wall somewhere in the São Paulo countryside, be it as an opening act for No Age and Matt & Kim at the Popload Gig (medium-sized festival in São Paulo that brings acclaimed international artists), with the dedication that is common to any first show of one’s life. I like to joke that they are a boy band for real. Just like on a classic boy band format, each member lives, on stage and on real life, like a character: Pata is the nutty, Pedro the seducer, Arthur the intellectual, Rolla the cool one and Tché the big baby boy. The only difference is that it requires no effort on their part. They are just that.
On SXSW’09 they showed well how much they can be a different band on each show – what is great. On one show in the middle of the afternoon they played like clockwork a performance that was considerably constrained when compared to their standards, but sufficient to excite the unfamiliar crowd. On another, in a late night open-bar party, there was such chaos that a single moment can’t escape my mind: while Arthur tried to make sense with a disintegrating drum set, Pata played guitar in the middle of the audience with his mouth bleeding and being choked by one of the members of Mae Shi; and the other three members formed a single pile of bodies, instruments and cables.
It’s funny how, just like their idols The Flaming Lips, they’re spot on when missing the target they aimed upon. On the new songs they notoriously seek inspiration on the guitars and drums of the afrobeat of Fela Kuti, on different generations of electronic pop (New Order, Max Tundra and Passion Pit), on the schizophrenic pop of bands like Mae Shi and Islands and on current indie rock deconstructors (Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors) without leaving behind the passion for the, say classical, indie rock of Wilco, Pavement etc. – what is a reflection of their unprejudiced ears (something not common at all throughout the music industry). However, far from being generic, the outcome sounds similar to famous explorers of not very conventional territories, such as Talking Heads, Dexy’s Midnight Runners and Modest Mouse. And, what is the best, it’s as personal and natural as the work of any of these bands. But I think it’s enough about Holger, now that in one paragraph I filled up with joy all the cut and paste journalists out there.
Well, in “No Brakes” – the title track of their new EP – they’ll ask you “would you follow us?”. The cleverer have already done it for a while. Hop in! I think it’s hard to regret it.

Se tem uma banda que conheço bem, é o Holger. Conheço desde antes de existir, na verdade. Conheço alguns dos caras desde moleques. Quer dizer, moleques eles ainda são, então deveria dizer que os conheço desde mais moleques.
No distante começo deste milênio eu fazia parte de uma banda chamada Vurla. Buscávamos um som complexo, calcado no post-rock e pautado pelo experimentalismo, improviso e no amor pelo krautrock. E conhecemos três garotos, que nos seus 16 anos, através de uma banda chamada projeto:, também queriam fazer post-rock. É claro que achamos aquilo lindo e meio que os adotamos. Os três garotos eram o Pedro, o Pata e o Arthur. Mais tarde a banda deles cresceu em integrantes e contou até com a Irina, que hoje toca no Garotas Suecas. E depois acabou.
Bandas acabam e nascem outras. Por um tempo eles bricaram de folk improvisado com o That’s All Folks, que fazia gravações em playgrounds e lançou as bases do que hoje é o Holger. Foi assim que começou a nascer o que seria o Green Valley EP. Lembro do dia do show do Akron/Family, em que o Pata me fez ouvir no seu iPod – ele sempre faz isso – as demos de sua nova banda, Holger on The Hills. “Brand New T-shirt”, com cara de hit, já tava lá. Felizmente, a parte da colina no nome da banda logo foi descartada.
Por um tempo a banda tocou como um sexteto: além dos três integrantes originais do projeto:, contava com o Rolla, o Tché e o Haddad, que saiu fora antes das gravações do Green Valley – o nome, vale lembrar, veio da cachaça Vale Verde, favorita dos caras e aprovada por gente como Will Oldham e Dan Deacon em rituais de degustação coletiva no bar Genésio.
Apesar de ser um belo disco, o Green Valley, ainda calcado nas influências e nas composições do projeto anterior, é um cartão de visitas pálido ante as apresentações ao vivo. Essas são imprevisíveis. A única constante é o sorriso na cara de cada um dos integrantes, que costumam tocar com dedicação de primeiro show da vida em qualquer lugar que estejam, seja para meia dúzia de pessoas numa biboca no interior de São Paulo, seja abrindo para o No Age e o Matt & Kim na Popload Gig. Gosto de brincar que eles são uma boy band for real. Assim como no modelo clássico de boy band, cada um dos integrantes encarna, no palco e na vida real, um personagem: o Pata é o maluquinho, o Pedro é o sedutor, o Arthur é o intelectual, o Rolla é o cool, e o Tché é o meninão. A única diferença é que pra isso não rola esforço. Eles são isso mesmo.
Na edição de 2009 do festival texano South by Southwest, eles mostraram bem o quanto eles podem ser uma banda diferente a cada show – e isso é muito bom. Em uma apresentação, no meio da tarde, trabalharam como um relógio em um show contido para seus padrões, o que já foi suficiente para empolgar o público que não os conhecia. Em outra, em uma festa com open bar de madrugada, o caos foi tamanho que um momento não sai da minha memória: enquanto o Arthur tentava fazer sentido em uma bateria que se desintegrava, o Pata, com a boca sangrando enquanto era enforcado por um dos integrantes da banda americana Mae Shi, tocava guitarra deitado no chão no meio do público, e os outros três formavam um único amontoado de corpos, instrumentos e cabos.
É engraçado como, assim como seus ídolos Flaming Lips, eles acertam em cheio ao errar o alvo em que miraram. Nas músicas novas, reflexo do ouvido sem preconceito dos caras – coisa rara no meio indie -, notoriamente se inspiram nas guitarras e batuques do afro beat de Fela Kuti, em gerações diferentes do pop eletrônico (New Order, Max Tundra, Passion Pit), na esquizofrenia pop de nomes como Mae Shi e Islands, e nos atuais desconstruidores do indie rock (Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors), sem deixar de lado a paixão pelo indie rock digamos clássico do Wilco, Pavement e companhia. O resultado, no entanto, longe de ser genérico, soa aparentado com o de notórios exploradores de territórios pouco óbvios, como Talking Heads, Dexy’s Midnight Runners e Modest Mouse. E, melhor de tudo, é tão pessoal e natural quanto o trabalho dessas bandas. Acho que já chega de falar do Holger,agora que em um parágrafo fiz a alegria da jornalistada do cut & paste.
Bom, em No Brakes, faixa título do novo EP eles vão te perguntar: “Você nos seguiria?”. Os mais espertos já estão atrás deles faz uma cara. Vai também, acho difícil se arrepender.
