| About Nicholai La Barrie |
Nicholai La Barrie
Nicholai La Barrie is one of a new generation of Trinidadian musicians, a generation that has taken the indigenous music of the island and fused it with styles from all over the world. He has been writing and performing music since the age of sixteen. Growing up in Trinidad at a time when the world became a global village, his influences are wide and varied, ranging from artists like Sting to Baaba Maal of whom you can find hints in LaBarrie's music.
Nicholai's music is a mixture of World Music and Hip Hop, fusing the different rhythms that he grew up with. He has been featured on compilations for various labels such as Jouvay 2000, D Rapso Nation – Anthology Of "The Best Of Rapso" from Rituals Music. In 1995 he began collaborating with artists such as 3canal, Ataklan, Sheldon Blackman and the Love Circle. He spent several years learning from the improvisations they did and recording various pieces before moving on to find his own style.
He worked at the Yard Studios as an engineer and having seen so many artists work he was moved to start writing and performing his own music. Nicholai has always listened to a variety of styles and rhythms and one day heard a piece that ignited a fire for Rapso music, a musical and lyrical expression of the truth and light with the hopes and fears of the artist.
LaBarrie's own first album came out after years of searching for his voice in order to express the truth that he believes is essential to music. LaBarrie found his style as a Rapso man when he started to work on Long Walk Home, the rest of the album just flowed. 'Superhero To Many Small Insects' is the first product of this continual discovery. He calls his album an experimentation infused with the fire and passion of raw expression.
The band grew together as organically as the music has done. It started with jamming sessions at the Oval House Theatre where Nicholai found other artists whom he respected and who loved the music and so invited them to work with him.
Nicholai & the Mango Seed Band are now blazing a trail for Rapso Music in the UK and Europe. Taking the fire and heart of the Urban Caribbean to the rest of the world.
Karlos Coleman
He grew up around live music at his parents' church and began his journey of creating music in his late teens. Since then Karlos has always made sure he could find a place to jam with other musicians. As time went on he honed in on guitar and percussion.
Karlos has spent the past ten or so years creating sounds just for himself until he was asked to gig with Nicholai La Barrie and later by Kocoa Brown of the KB Fusionnaires. As well as creating his own music he has performed with both The Mango Seed and the KB Fusionnaires
While in primary school, Colin joined one of Trinidad ’s premier steel bands, the Trintoc Invaders, as one of their percussionists, but continued to practise his drumming skills with the band during his spare time. He then went on to perform with the award winning Phase II Pan Groove Steel Orchestra under the leadership of Len ‘Boogsie’ Sharpe where he had the opportunity to tour Japan , Martinique, Puerto Rico, Aruba , New York and Atlanta .
It was whilst still with the orchestra that Colin joined Fireflight brass band as a rodie and technician. From there he moved on to playing percussion and eventually got his break when the band’s drummer departed. By 1989, he joined the band Atlantik and in 2000, he helped form the band Surface. Both bands were hugely popular and they were often requested to perform at various venues around Trinidad, the Caribbean and the States.
Recognised for his skill, Colin has been called to worked with some of the most esteemed artists in the Caribbean region with the likes of Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires, Charlie’s Roots, Roy Cape and world music artist Mungal Patasar and Pantar to name but a few, as a musician, arranger, producer and co-writer.
Fabien Dudragne
Fabien’s musical experiences started in a cover band with childhood friends in Paris. Shifting between guitar and bass he later explored classic rock anthems, less classic fusion and jazz tunes, and co-founded the mind free trad-rock-breton-celtic-band Tri Luern Glaz. After a few years spent in London concentrating on his sound engineering talents, he met Nicholai for the mastering of Superhero to Many Small Insects. Then started a new story: Nicholai La Barrie & The Mango Seed...
Roy Alexander Weise
Roy Alexander Weise was born in 1988 and has been exposed to music from his infancy. He began singing and playing the keyboard in primary school and joined his school choir in secondary school where he was a well-known member. From there he was chosen to be a part of the 'Chamber Choir' which consisted of the six best vocalists in the school. Roy performed at the Royal Albert Hall including solos that are still spoken of today. He began performing as a soloist when he joined Oval Voices at the age of 13 and hasn't stopped singing since.
Roy enjoys singing and performing in the genres of soul, jazz, funk, gospel, pop and R&B. He was also a trombone player in school which lead him into big band jazz. Aside from this he is an actor, writer, director and performer. Roy collaborated with Nicholai on his 'Warrior Style' track alongside J. Province. He was later asked to join Nicholai & the Mangoseed early this year as a back-up vocalist and keyboard player. He accepted the offer as he has strong belief in the conscious lyrics and stories of the songs and enjoys the magnificent sounds of the world music fusion.
