    Press release Cavan to Host All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil 2010 September 12, 2009 Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann has awarded Cavan Town the prestigious honour of hosting Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann 2010. Cavan is celebrating the announcement following a meeting at Comhaltas headquarters in Monkstown, Dublin on September 12, at which the Ardchomhairle voted to stage Ireland’s premier traditional culture event in the Lake County. The Director General of Comhaltas, Senator Labhrás Ó Murchú, said that Tullamore, who has hosted the event for the past three years, has set the bar very high for future venues. “Their innovation, dedication, professionalism, hospitality and attention to detail were inspiring. They have placed our cultural traditions on a pedestal and have raised the morale of the hundreds of thousands of people who attended the Fleadhanna for the last three years”. Senator Ó Murchú said that a very significant thing about the Fleadh was the effective partnership which exists between Comhaltas, Local Authorities and other public agencies, Gardaí, sponsors, local media, the business community, venue proprietors and the general public. He is positive that Cavan, which has a long tradition and heritage of Irish music and culture, will seamlessly take up the gauntlet and continue on this trend very admirably. Although Cavan has not hosted an All Ireland Fleadh in recent times, it was one of the first venues to stage the big event. In 1954, Cavan hosted the fourth Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann during the formative years of the Comhaltas movement. The Fleadh which is now an 8 day event will officially open on Sunday August 15 until Sunday August 22 incorporating the Scoil Éigse (the Comhaltas Summer school) running for the full week before the event and Seachtain na hÉigse. The Fleadh will include competitions, events and concerts such as the awarding of the Fleadh Ard Olamh, the overseas concert and the excitement of the All Ireland Senior Ceili Band competition. Speaking after the announcement, the County Arts Officer, Catriona O’Reilly said the Fleadh will greatly enrich the cultural life of the entire region. County Manager Jack Keyes added that the event will be a unique opportunity for Cavan to showcase its talents as well as bringing a welcome boost to the local economy during these difficult times. According to one of the Fleadh organisers, renowned Cavan musician Martin Donohoe, the All-Ireland Fleadh is Ireland’s largest festival of music, song and dance and 2010 in Cavan promises to attract over 200,000 visitors and 11,000 musicians from all over the world. The fleadh competitions alone attracting over 4,000 competitors annually from all over Ireland, Britain, Europe, USA and as far away as the Tokyo branch. The All Ireland Fleadh which plays host to hundreds of sessions will confirm Cavan’s place at the heart of Ireland’s living tradition.

ARE U A REEL PLAYER Or a jig, Hornpipe, polka ,air ,slide, barndance ,Singer ,Dancer THE NYAH NEEDS YOU NYAH — County Cavan Festival 2010 FÉILE EALAÍON CHONTAE AN CHABHÁN, MARCH 10TH – 17 TH Preparations are well in place for the Nyah County Cavan Festival 2010, which will see hundreds of musicians and artists descend on the Breffni territory throughout the month of March to take part in a packed programme of events across the county, ranging from major concerts to intimate pub sessions, with a host of extras including music and song workshops, the ‘Jig of Life’ awards, and book and CD launches. The word “Nyah” refers to the very expression of the tradition; to the soul and feeling that makes it so unique......it’s about the lift the music can give to the hardest heart. And what better time than the present to let the hair down and enjoy a collective “lift” from all the doom, gloom and depression? The Nyah must go on — so forget the recession and enjoy the session! And there’ll be no shortage of top-flight musicians, dancers and singers in seisiún at the Nyah Féile Ealaíon Chontae an Chabhán 2010. . Counties like Clare and Donegal are renowned for their music, and they have their Clancy and Kennedy festivals. But over the last six years the Nyah has grown and grown — and claimed March as the month when the auld drumlin county of Cavan takes centre stage. The 2010 Nyah Festival will see events in Ballyjamesduff, Belturbet, Cavan Town, Cootehill and Kilnaleck — while Virginia, on the shores of scenic Lough Ramor claims pride of place on this occasion, and will host two gala concerts featuring the best of the best as well as a series of workshops in every instrument and aspect of the tradition. And while the annual festival brings great artists from far an wide, it also remains a celebration of all things Cavan, celebrating the music, song, dance and culture of a county that has its very own musical style within the Ulster tradition. Working behind the scenes in promoting the whole thing are local enthusiasts of the tradition, drawn from groups such as Cavan Town Comhaltas, Cavan Tourism, Cavan Multi-Cultural Network and Cavan Co Council. All are committed to promoting every art form in the area, including the visual and literary arts also. Regional artists will have the opportunity to network with those visiting from farther afield, and the Nyah’s hope is to raise the profile of art and traditional arts both locally and nationally. The Nyah aims to immerse people of every age, from schoolchildren upwards (through the school programme and master classes) in the music of the drumlins, giving everyone a chance to work with world-class performers and learn from them.  But the tuition is only a part of it — the sessions, the talks, the concerts and the craic all add up to make Nyah one of Ireland’s steadily growing festivals. So be sure to put a bit of “Nyah” into your life and visit some of the events planned for County Cavan Festival 2010, from 10th-17th March. And remember to keep a look out for all Nyah events, which continue on a year-round basis. The Nyah Arts Festival Programme 2009 is subsidised by the Arts Council, Cavan Co Council Arts Office, Comhaltas and Fáilte Ireland. The Nyah gives grateful thanks for this support and acknowledges all those others who have provided generous backing over the years. After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace...

    Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
    (please see my blog):
    TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001

    Where traditions are not so rare;
        Sea, country and works scent the air;
    A multitude of monuments,
        Planted tubs and patterned pavements.

    The longish pedestrian malls;
        The remnants of defensive walls;
    Historic buildings are a gauge
        Of the respect for heritage.

    Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
        Estuaries guarded by shields;
    Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
        Romantic-ruin go-betweens.

    Rivers in parts licked by trees,
        Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
    And crossed by practical delights -
        Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.

    Fine churches headed at Durham;
        Football kits ad infinitum;
    Kept castles - one for study;
        Masonry behind masonry.

    And, with moulding-works out that way,
    It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

    Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
    (please see my blog):
    WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN

    Once drove an old sedan, up north,
    From a place in Sydney to Cairns;
    Then to Kuranda I went forth,
    By train, to look without set plans.

    I browsed through the trendy market,
    With fresh fruits of tropical kind;
    Walked to the creek through lush thicket -
    Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.

    I dined in a scenic cafe;
    Then, outside, as I wrote for yen,
    Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey,
    You go walkabout with your pen.”

    Request or question, I don’t know -
    Assured voices, elderly men.
    That’s now several years ago,
    And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.
