Oceansize has been trying to keep it's ladylike hands and pudgy face clean in this dirdy business for a long time now. So much has happened - albums have been made, many gigs have been played, many stomachs have been turned. But what is Oceansize? And, more importantly, WHY is Oceansize?
Oceansize began life in sunny Salford in 1998 as a kind of weekend social gathering. 5 young and agile men bonding over mucky Stella Artois ('as long as you've got four you're alright'), foreign hallucinogens and the love of the two Ds: Distortion and Delay. Over the following years they would endure constant internal battles to determine which was their most favoured effect.
After exactly one million appearances at the Manchester Roadhouse, the band was eagerly snapped up by Beggar's Banquet in 2002, shortly after a white knuckle trip to the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. Two albums followed, 2003's 'Effloresce' and 2005's 'Everyone Into Position' to (pretty much*(1)) universal praise. Betwixt the albums came the more 2004's metallic 'Music For Nurses' EP, which remains a fan favourite.
2006 saw major changes kick Oceansize right up the arse - founding member and bass player Jon Ellis did one and in jumped multi-instrumentalist Steven Hodson. A change of home was also in order - German label Superball were all over it and bagged the band for a run of albums, the first of which was 2007's 'Frames', a return to the more sprawling and hypnotic (and LONG) Oceansize tunes. The following year 'Frames' was re-released as a Deluxe Edition package featuring the band's first live DVD.
2009 saw the release of the 7 disc (3 DVDs and 4 CDs) live boxset, 'Feed To Feed', featuring virtually every Oceansize song ever written performed live in Manchester. The band also built their own studio where 'work' is being done day and night on their fourth album. In the meantime, the sweet-as-a-little-pie 'Home & Minor' EP is the first fruits from the new studio. More on that in a minute...
So what does Oceansize actually sound like? To answer that, we'd need to start coughing out logic-free cod-philosophical analogies. We'll leave that to RayGun. If it matters to you, Oceansize loves texture, dimension, fucking about with time, discord, dissonance, the element of surprise and (sometimes) taking a long time to make a point.
If it's the kind of thing that makes you check a band out, you might like to peruse this list of just SOME of the bands we've played with:
Faith No More
Biffy Clyro
Porcupine Tree
Cardiacs
Mclusky
Aereogramme (RIP)
Smashing Pumpkins
Coheed And Cambria
Fightstar
The Cooper Temple Clause
Lift To Experience
And heaps more i can't remember.
Oceansize would like to thank Craig David for inspiring this 'third-person perspective' drivel.
*1 - Mike's dad didn't really like any of them.

Hey guys, it was such a great show last night, although we were missing a few songs... You've written such unbelievable tunes during the last 11 years, so maybe your concerts just have to be longer? Especially songs like You Wish, Heaven Alive or New Pin would habe been great. But anyway, I never experienced such a catching concert before, so see you next time in Dresden ;) Greets Erik/Pierrot
