I was born in the shadow of Napolean's Nose, on the slopes of Cave Hill overlooking Belfast Lough in the summer of '49. I grew up in breeze block terrace on a post war housing estate dubbed The White City. My father, born in Scotland and drafted to Belfast during the war (where he met my mother) was a man of quiet principle. He refused to be housed in a sectarian ghetto and for that I raise my hat to him. Instead we grew up in a 'mixed' ghetto although when 'The Troubles' came it very quickly capitulated and sectarianism ruled the roost. But by then I had learned what tolerance means.
In my childhood this was a magical place that forged my artistic and spiritual sensibilities. As my late, beautiful brother Eamonn (painter and poet) said, It was our Garden of Eden. And although I left it many years ago it lingers in my spirit with a freshness and vibrancy that still surprises me. It is the crucible of my poetry, the cradle of my song.
I value your visit. If you find anything that interests, inspires or repulses you please share your thoughts with me. I am open to meaningful dialogue x
