   Friends of Pema Chodron's Blurbs
About me:

Ane Pema Chodron was born Deirdre Blomfield-Brown in 1936, in New York City. She attended Miss Porter's School in Connecticut and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley. She taught as an elementary school teacher for many years in both New Mexico and California. Pema has two children and three grandchildren.

While in her mid-thirties, Ane Pema traveled to the French Alps and encountered Lama Chime Rinpoche, with whom she studied for several years. She became a novice nun in 1974 while studying with Lama Chime in London. His Holiness the Sixteenth Karmapa came to England at that time, and Ane Pema received her ordination from him.

Pema first met her root guru, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, (the "Vidyadhara") in 1972. Lama Chime encouraged her to work with Rinpoche, and it was with him that she ultimately made her most profound connection, studying with him from 1974 until his death in 1987. At the request of the Karmapa, she received the full bikshuni ordination in the Chinese lineage of Buddhism in 1981 in Hong Kong. She first met Ayya Khema at the first Buddhist nuns conference in Bodhgaya India in 1987, and they were close friends from that time until her death.

Ane Pema served as the director of Karma Dzong in Boulder, Colorado until moving in 1984 to rural Cape Breton, Nova Scotia to be the director of Gampo Abbey. The Vidyadhara gave her explicit instructions on running Gampo Abbey. The success of her first two books, The Wisdom of No Escape and Start Where You Are, made her something of a celebrity as a woman Buddhist teacher and as a specialist in the mahayana lojong teachings. She and Judy Lief were instructed personally by the Vidyadhara on lojong, "which is why I took off with it," she explains.

Pema has struggled with health problems in the past five years but her condition has improved and she anticipates being well enough to continue teaching programs at Gampo Abbey and in California. She plans for a simplified travel schedule with a predictable itinerary, as well as the opportunity to spend an increased amount of time in solitary retreat under the guidance of Venerable Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche.

Pema is interested in helping establish Tibetan Buddhist monastacism in the West, as well in continuing her work with western Buddhists of all traditions, sharing ideas and teachings. She has written five books: The Wisdom of No Escape, Start Where You Are, When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times and The Places That Scare You and No Time to Lose are available from Shambhala Publications. She recently completed a new book called "Practicing Peace in Times of War" that will be published by Shambhala Publications later in 2006.

The Evil One is like a prankster running through a crowd, holding up his tightly closed hand. No one knows what he is holding, and he goes up to each individual and asks, "What do you suppose I have in my hand?" Each one imagines that the closed hand contains just what he desires. They all hurry and run after the prankster. Then, when he has tricked them all into following him, he opens his hand and it is completely empty. The same is true of the Evil One. He fools the world, tricking everyone into following him. All men think that his hand contains what they desire. But in the end, when he opens his hand, there is nothing in it. No worldly desire is ever fulfilled. Worldly desires are like sunbeams in a dark room. They may seem solid, but the person who tries to grasp a sunbeam finds nothing in his hand. The same is true of all worldly desires. _  Nachman of Bratzlav, _   Teachings of the Jewish Mystics.

The essence of Zen Buddhism consists in acquiring a new viewpoint of looking at life and things generally. By this I mean that if we want to get into the inmost life of Zen, we must forgo all our ordinary habits of thinking which control our everyday life, we must try to see if there is any other way of judging things, or rather if our ordinary way is always sufficient to give us the ultimate satisfaction of our spiritual needs. If we feel dissatisfied somehow with this life, if there is something in our ordinary way of living that deprives us of freedom in its most sanctified sense, we must endeavour to find a way somewhere which gives us a sense of finality and contenment. Zen proposes to do this for us and assures us of the acquirement of a new point of view in which life assumes a fresher, deeper, and more satisfying aspect. This acquirement, however, is really and naturally the greatest mental cataclysm one can go through with in life. It is no easy task, it is a kind of fiery baptism, and one has to go through the storm, the earthquake, the overthrowing of the mountains, and the breaking in pieces of the rocks. D.T. Suzuki _ Essays in Zen Buddhism.

Hello Dearest Pema and Friends,

Himalaya from Pokhara Lake with reflections of the Annapurna range in the lake.

THE WATERS OF MY SPIRIT ARE DEEP AND PURE

"I am still learning."
MICHELANGELO

All of the larger-than-life questions
about our presence here on earth
and the gifts we have to
offer are spiritual questions.
To seek answers to these questions
is to seek a scared path.

(Dr. Lauren Artress)

I draw from the well of universal experience and consciousness.
I replenish that well by putting attentive love and kindness into the world.
I respect the unity and connection of all things to one another.
I live consciously and creatively as a part of a scared unity.

I want to wish you a wonderful finish to your week and a blessed weekend!

Love to you and yours,
Lisa

Hello Friends of Pema,

"Expect your every need to be met,
expect the answer to every problem,
 expect abundance on every level,
expect to grow spiritually." (Eileen Caddy)

GOD IS THE ROOT OF MY ABUNDANT SECURITY

Sourced by the Universe, I am able to be generous. I am rooted in the wealth of God as a tree in rich soil. I share with others from God's unending abundance. As I share, I am replenished. There is no lack, no shortfall, only flow. I trust and affirm there is enough - more than enough - for all of us. As I share God's abundance, my flow increases. As I celebrate my increased flow, opportunities and occasions for still greater generosity appear to me, presenting themselves as opportunities for my extended faith. Trusting that I am a channel for universal flow, I allow good and abundance to move through me, prospering other and myself. As I prosper others, I am prospered in return.

Love,
Lisa

Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi (13 July 1995)
Aung San Suu Kyi advocates non-violent resistance
For the Burmese people, Ms Suu Kyi, 64, represents their best and perhaps sole hope that one day there will be an end to the country's military repression.
As a pro-democracy campaigner and leader of the opposition National League for Democracy party (NLD), she has spent more than 11 of the past 19 years in some form of detention under Burma's military regime.
In 1991 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to bring democracy to Burma.

Be soft in your practice. Think of the method as a fine silvery stream, not a raging waterfall. Follow the stream, have faith in its course. It will go its own way, meandering here, trickling there. It will find the grooves, the cracks, the crevices. Just follow it. Never let it out of your sight. It will take you.   _Sheng-yen

For all these years, my certain Zen: neither I nor the world exist. The sutras neat within the box, my cane hooked upon the wall, I lie at peace in moonlight or, hearing water splashing on the rock, sit up: none can purchase pleasure such as this: spangled across the step-moss, a million coins !  Shutaku (1308-1388)

DEFY THE LIES !     We have all been seduced by the world's enchanting offers of happiness through pleasure and accumulation, but they are lies, shams, fallacies. In order to find the true happiness and freedom that are available, we must understand this clearly. We must experience a revolution in our perception of the material world. Inside each one of us resides the truth; and however deeply buried or obscured that truth has become, we have the ability to uncover and experience it for ourselves - and happiness and freedom will follow. Forgiveness is a process that continues throughout our life. We can't just say the phrases or do the meditation a couple times and be done with it. We can't just decide to forgive and magically let go of all the past pains and resentments. But it has to begin somewhere, and it begins with the understanding that all harm caused comes out of suffering and ignorance. Noah Levine: AGAINST THE STREAM.
