Mako Sica - Live on Mayday at Strobe LP (PERM-009)

Mako Sica - Live on Mayday at Strobe LP

$14.99
[buy]

Mako Sica is a Chicago band that features two former members of the underappreciated post-rock group Rope. However, post-rock doesn't really describe the sounds that Mako Sica make. Caucasian Desert Rock is the ridiculous sub-sub-genre that immediately came to mind the first time we saw them. Basically, Mako Sica sound like the more recent Dead Man Soundtrack-style Earth, if Earth were a Not Not Fun band. Live on Mayday at Strobe is Mako Sica's vinyl debut and it includes two sparse, but engaging, side-long tracks of trancelike psychedelia heavily influenced by the furthest out side of the Impulse Records catalog. At times, Mako Sica's sound is reminiscent of a Free Jazz-ier Group Doueh. As you can see, Mako Sica are a unique sounding group that are not easy to pigeonhole. Don't waste time trying to figure out where this is going to get filed in your collection as this release is limited to 120 hand-numbered, hand screen printed, hand stamped, hand assembled copies. Each copy includes a digital download of the entirety of the Strobe session recordings and a couple of super sweet inserts. We released it, so it's obviously comes with our highest recommendation. First come, first served.

Black Math - Debut LP (PERM-008)

Black Math - Debut LP

Out Of Print

We've been doing our own label for a little over two years now. We're not looking to make a living off of it necessarily; we mostly enjoy putting out records of bands that we really like in hopes that other people will hear them and like them too. We've done 7 records to date, 4 of which were released this year. The 8th record in our catalog is by a killer Chicago lo-fi bedroom pop trio called Black Math. We've pressed their debut LP in a limited edition of 100 copies with hand-stamped labels and insert artwork by ILTH of Daily Void. The jackets were hand-screened on both sides by Kyle of Cacaw. The record is loaded with dark, '80s UK cassette culture influenced, synth pop with guitar, cello, sparse reverb-drenched vocals, and drum machine beats you could dance to if you really wanted to. Fans of Joy Division, Tubeway Army, early Depeche Mode and OMD, and/or more contemporary stuff like Blank Dogs and Gary War will definitely dig the songs on this LP. Did we mention that it's limited to 100 copies and that it will be available pretty much exclusively from Permanent and the band.

Cheveu - Cheveau LP (PERM-007)

2nd Press, Black Wax

Cheveu - Cheveau LP

$14.99
[buy]

Two records ago we laid a noisy slab of wax on you by a sick French band called the Anals. That was our label's sixth vinyl release. The now out-of-print Black Math record was released seventh, even though it's technically catalog number 008. Circumstances and delays beyond our control were the cause for this madness, but we're back on track now that we have PERM-007 in our hot little hands. 006 and 007 butt up nicely to each other in that they're both records by French weird punk bands. Cheveu is just as weird as Anals, but in a slightly more subtle, garage-punk kinda way. They sound like the Fall on acid, but you know, Frencher. How did we work out a record deal with a second weird French band you ask? Allow us to quote our August 30th weekly update:

Cheveu did an in-store a year or so ago with Feeling of Love and totally knocked us out. Before they left, they laid a CDR of unreleased material on us that we spun and spun and spun, until it dawned on us that this material needed to be released on vinyl. We wrote the band and asked them what they were planning on doing with this unreleased material. When we found out there was no vinyl release in the works, we made an offer and the rest is P-Rex history.

Well it wasn't history then, but it is now. You may purchase a copy of Cheveu's Cheveau from us directly as of right now for $14.99, if you so choose. Each copy is loaded with a FREE digital download code and limited edition white vinyl copies are available exclusively from us, while supplies last. There's only 100 and many of them are already spoken for, but we should have black vinyl around for a however long 400 copies lasts. You can preview one track from the release on the Permanent myspace page and another on Cheveu's myspace page. The tracks are titled Kador Du Porno and Pangolin respectively. Hope you dig ‘em even half as much as we do.

The Anals - Total Anal LP (PERM-006)

The Anals - Total Anal LP

$14.99
[buy]

We're very proud to announce the release of our sixth record. This time we have an LP from The Anals, an abrasive French electro-punk band from the same part of France that Cheveu, Feeling of Love, A.H. Kraken, and the majority of Le Grande Triple Alliance Internationalle de L'Est calls home. The LP consists of the two songs from the killer Sweet Rot single from last year, plus 10 other unreleased jams. The Anals are a tough band to describe, but they're heavily influenced by the early works of the seminal German electro-punk, industrial band D.A.F.. However, they sound a bit more like the bastard child of Suicide and Brainbombs to us. Total Anal is filled with dark, repetitive, noisy, and abrasive songs that we think you will all come to love just as much as any of the aforementioned bands. The first press is limited to 500 copies, free download code and 11"x11" two-sided insert included!

Sneakers - Children Into People 7" EP (PERM-005)

Sneakers - Children Into People 7

$4.99
[buy]

The fifth jam in the Permanent Records label discography is also our first 7", the Sneakers "Children Into People EP". Sneakers consists of Rex (Cave's drummer) and Zach (former Cave bassist) and “Children Into People” is their debut vinyl release. The grooves within contain some of the catchiest weird punk jams you’ll ever lay ears on.

Cacaw - Get A Brain 12" EP + CD (PERM-004)

2nd Press, Ltd. 200, Hand-Numbered

Cacaw - Get A Brain 12 Cacaw - Get A Brain 12

$14.99
[buy]

Cacaw's "Get A Brain" EP! Limited to 200 hand numbered copies. One-sided clear vinyl 12" with hand screen printed jackets and vinyl. New print on halved backside of sleeve.

From the ashes of Coughs, formerly one of Chicago’s best noise-rock bands, comes CACAW! Comprised of ardent members of the Chicago underground and art community (half-the band are professional screen printers), Cacaw is Carrie and Anya from Coughs, Zack from Lovely Little Girls, and Kyle from Slut Barf. Cacaw takes the Coughs sound and distills it down to a more minimal, yet no less intense brand of really fucking groovy noise rock. The band is essentially a double-bass guitar and drums rhythm section with some amplified can ‘o’ pennies, guitar, and snarly female vocals (vocal duties split between Anya and Carrie) over the top. Intense!

Cave / California Raisins - split 10" + CD (PERM-003)

Cave / California Raisins split 10

$9.99
[buy]

Cave is back and this time they’re sharing the limelight with Columbia, Missouri’s newest group, California Raisins. The new, self titled Cave / California Raisins split is now available on 10" wax and includes a CD of the complete album. The California Raisins share nothing in common with the fictional r&b animated raisins of the late-80s. These dudes get down and dirty on some groove-a-delic punk rock. They share a riff-loving mindset with Cave, but unlike Cave they have a full-time vocalist and a less overtly psychedelic sound. We'll leave the name dropping up to the critics because their sound is so unique, we’re having a hard time thinking of any bands they sound like.

Although Cave is now based out of Chicago, they too once called Columbia, Missouri home. Cave shares members with the now-defunct Warhammer 48k that put out 2 intensely heavy and very psychedelic post-hardcore records. Most of the post-hardcore was worked out of their system in Warhammer and Cave has become a distillation of the heavy, psychedelic influences. They take a riff, jam it for all it’s worth and then they have their way with it.

This limited edition vinyl 10" with CD is the latest release by Chicago’s most exciting psychedelic band, Cave. The Cave side includes two epic psychedelic jams, possibly their best work to date. The California Raisins side is their first release. CD includes the same music that’s on the 10". The jackets are hand-screen printed by members of Cave. all this goodness for a meager $9.99.

Cave - Hunt Like Devil / Jamz LP + CD (PERM-002.5)

Back In Print, Euro Repress!

Cave - Hunt Like Devil / Jamz LP Euro art

$14.99
[buy]

Review of Cave's "Hunt Like Devil / Jamz" from Aquarius Records:

At first glance, it might be difficult to know what this record is all about. the sleeve is just a photo of trees and leaves, a dense overgrown forest. pull out the CD, that too is cryptic, just some random letters on the disc, the sleeve, an old crinkled photo from some seventies porn mag of a topless cowgirl with a gun in her mouth. there's an insert, with a bunch of strange shapes, the word Cave right at the top. but we know what it is. we've been waiting for this disc for ages. the debut recording from, wait for it... cave! who just so happen to be the spacerock krautrock dronerock riff heavy jam band side project of one Warhammer 48k, who were already spacey and krauty and droney to begin with, so needless to say this is some seriously kick ass, AQ freakout worthy shit.

For the attention span impaired, howabout some Hawkwind, Can, Circle, Lightning Bolt, Pharaoh Overlord? Sounds good huh? Well, it's easy to hear bits and pieces of all of those bands in the sound of Cave, a dual drummer-ed riff heavy psych rock, that takes single riffs and hammers at them, pounding and pummeling, repetitive and mesmerizing, a sort of kraut flecked hypnorock, but with all sorts of strange twists and turns, bizarre arrangements, baffling breakdowns, but woven into longform jams that should have anyone into the above mentioned bands frothing at the mouth.

The opening track is a gorgeous little tangle of minor key melodies, looped and repeated, over a tense distant drone, thick swaths of keyboard whir over soft tangles of acoustic guitar and space-y backwards guitar swoops, but then the opening riff of the second track kicks in, and it's all fuzzy and feral, the greatest riff pharoah overlord never wrote, and they just hang on it, way longer than any normal band would, forever, before the drums kick in, and they're off, a relentless and hooky groove, with brief blasts of super dynamic chaos, before slipping right back into it. Keyboards lay still more hypnotic melodies over the top, vocals, when there are any, are shouted way down in the mix, or are wordless falsetto la-la-la's, adding more texture and sonic complexity than anything. The dual drummers mix it up spitting out occasional tribal squalls, sometimes thick swirls of staticky fuzz wash over the proceedings, but their propulsive fortitude never falters. The first two tracks would almost be enough. Nearly 12 minutes of heavy freaked out space jam nirvana. you can practically feel the walls heaving and the sweat dripping through the speakers. You'll probably need a lie down afterwards. But there's no time, cuz hell, there's 6 more tracks to dig through. the sound is punk rock, lo-fi, but lush and epic, damaged and delirious, like garage rockers raised on Magma and Faust, there's plenty of Neu! in there, Stereolab too then, but it's way heavier than that, the guitars crunchy and thick, occasionally opening up into wailing psychrock blowouts, the drums getting more and more distorted and frenzied. Imagine an amphetamine fueled Circle or Can, but via the basement, the sound a sweat soaked drug drenched mostly instrumental kraut groove. mathy, murky, like the fucked up younger brother of yes, a neanderthal krautrock, laced with awesome grinding space rock riffage, blown out squalls of ur-psych, flurries of percussive splatter, chanting cult vocals, bits of what the fuck vocoder (!), but for all the weirdness, the core sound of Cave is the riff. whether it's a warbly synth, or a superdistorted guitar, or tra-la-la vocals, they all align themselves with that riff, the mission, to entrance, to ensorcel, a heaving, pulsing, throbbing mass, the sound magnetic and irresistible. endless jams that aren't really, but feel like they should be. like they are anyway. transcending the laws of time and space, dragging us kicking and screaming, bouncing and bobbing, into some blissed out basement at the end of the universe, where we subsist of nothing but riffs, drums and fx. we never want to leave.

Killer packaging, it's an LP and a CD, same music on both, fold over full color sleeve, full color one sided CD sleeve (all described above) and a full color thick cardstock insert. And of course, limited, only 500 copies!

Warhammer 48k - An Ethereal Oracle LP (PERM-001)

Warhammer 48k - An Ethereal Oracle LP art

$14.99
[buy]

Our first release was the Warhammer 48k "An Ethereal Oracle" LP (perm001). It is available now on 180 gram virgin vinyl in a limited edition deluxe gatefold sleeve with a four panel fold out insert. $14.99. Permanent Records' second release is a LP/CD combo by Cave called "Hunt Like Devil / Jamz" (perm002). also $14.99. We're taking orders (permanentrecordschicago.com) now and we're shipping now ($3 extra for shipping within the continental us). For you local Chicagoans we will have it in stock. we also accept Paypal, money orders, cash, and credit cards over the phone. you can listen to a couple of tracks off of "An Ethereal Oracle" over at myspace.com/warhammer48k and a few cuts from "Hunt Like Devil / Jamz" by Cave at myspace.com/realreelpro. Prepare to have your mind blown! Drop us a line if you would like to order and/or if you have any questions regarding the label.

from the Chicago Journal article written by Josh Zanger:

An ethereal oracle itself is very much worth documenting. many different rock subgenre styles (sludge rock, post-hardcore, experimental/angular indie rock) seem to stick out during the course of nine tracks and 45 minutes, with plausible comparisons being drawn to Shellac, Bastro, the Paper Chase, and Melvins. Although complimentary, such recommended-if-you-like lists tend to come up short with fully describing what Warhammer 48k is about.

The record gets underway with "track one," a distorted radio transmission that sets a primal, experimental/psychedelic tone and shows that the band is more about making a rounded, theme-oriented album than throwing together nine of their hardest hitters. That said, An Ethereal Oracle is the combination of three main aggressive aspects-a thunderous yet sludgy sound, drawn-out psychedelic inventiveness, and full-throttle electric bass-driven post-punk jam outs. For an exemplary sample of all of the above, "track six" (clever, eh) features snare-rim clicks, throat-searing screams, and the catchiest bass line this side of chic's "good times".

And while this album most likely won't overwhelm the MTV masses, it is a perfectly consistent and powerful record that any nascent label would love to call their maiden release.
