On this, his last mission before he can return home, he crashes on an unknown planet, where he is awoken out of hyper-sleep to find that he's been stranded. Rather than get to work trying to repair his ship's damaged systems—or even check to make sure that the planet has the appropriate balance of nitrogen and oxygen to ensure his eyes don't pop out of his skull, Kanye boldly goes out to rap and dance on its barren surface.

Dark-wave buried in tape hiss, with grinding synth, electric cello, and drum machine. The
three piece lists Depeche Mode and Big Black as influences, but they're not straight up
80s.

On a different tip entirely, I got a killer self-released tape of cello/synth/drum
machine dark-wave electro from Black Math, a duo from Chicago who present a dozen or so tracks that fit right in with the whole Weird Records scene. More than anything they
sound like a more New-Wave version of mid period Jesus and Mary Chain at times.
Interesting to see the new cassette culture spreading to more forgotten subgenres of
underground music as I expected the tape to sound like either a car crash or a cloud as
most of the tapes I get in the mail are. However Black Math got the tunes and hooks with
minimal instrumentation and arrangements. The songs are split between male and female vocals although they are distant enough to not be distracting to the overall aesthetic of self-recorded basement dance dungeons. There's a dark driving momentum to the songs that even in their nascent state of amateur first creations still give a nice pin-prick to the ears. Keeping my eyes on these two.

For Black Math, Chicago is merely a pseudonym for their dark workshop creating mutilated oddities. Rather than handing some kid an intact playtime object, Ragetty Ann/Andy is fed through a table saw while you sit and watch (it’s ok to grin). “Part of Me” and it’s sharp toothed ferocity is only a small taste of Black Math and their disquieting tunes. Jimmy sent these tracks over to me yesterday and are, actually, part of an ep that is up for grabs on their myspace (I thought i was special, dude!). Not to neglect their recently released, s/t, LP which is available through Permanent Records and is limited to only 100 copies. Yeah, I’ve got a sample for that too and it’s good. Nate

This Chicago duo creates electronic music that would be a killer soundtrack to a
superhero movie with the protagonist running slow motion as a building is blowing up
behind him/her. It sounds like they only use distorted vocals, a drum machine, and some
sort of organ? It is a little different from what MRR usually reviews but I totally dig
it.
