Plain Wrap was formed in 1983 by singer/guitarist Don Burnet, aka Don Nix, Don Wrap, and Dallas Don. The original drummer was Mike Rosso, a bandmate of Don's from the earlier hardcore band Mox Nix. After a few others came and went, the position of bass player went to Bob Gnarly, formerly of No Crisis. The band was centered in Huntington Beach, California, and played many shows in Southern California, and also did several short tours in the Northwest and Southwest U.S. Plain Wrap opened for bands such as Social Distortion, Circle Jerks, Vandals, TSOL, Dead Kennedys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, GBH, The Dickies, The Exploited and many more.
In 1985, Plain Wrap released their debut LP entitled "Original Music for a Generic World", on the now defunct Enigma label. Album sales were brisk, more touring and local shows ensued, and the band enjoyed international radio airplay and fandom, as well as being a favorite on KROQ's "Rodney on the Roq" radio program. In 1986, Bob Gnarly left the band, and Plain Wrap officially ended as Don and Mike started a new and decidedly different band called 3-D Picnic.
In the spring of 2008, the boys, now grown men with wives and children, decided to reunite for a benefit show in (where else) Huntington Beach. They (and the audience) all had so much fun that they decided to play a few more shows. And to herald their return, 2008 will see the release of "Original Music..." on compact disc, for the first time ever. Digitally remastered, with an 8 page foldout, the CD promises to be both sonically exciting and aesthetically exquisite, at least as much as a punk/pop record could be. Who knows how long it will last, but for now, Plain Wrap is back.
Hey Don, I've edited some of the songs from the Plain Wrap show at Fitzgeralds and have them up on my B gnarly space. There are also a couple pictures there as well. I'll see ya at your Spaceland gig on Sunday with the Echo Park Players. Very cool tunes my friend. B Gnarly
Great seeing you guys at the Legion. Never saw you guys in the 80's. Saw Lutafisk about 20 times in the 90's. Now I see can see the influence of the past on the present in the 21st century. Thanks for doing the show with us. Dave Travis - Carnage Asada
That's so funny that someone said that Olympic show influenced them so much!! THE REALITY (my recollection) you - Don - got your very first - and last - DUI, so I slept in the van in a mini mini skirt and heels ALONE and FREEZING, til you were released, Bob Hemsley passed out under the food and booze tables backstage and didn't wake up until the following day (still under the tables) and we decided that night that GBH stood for Great Big Hair. Oh and the first of two identical photos of you (Don) & me were in the paper the next day where I'm sitting on the side of the stage in a white shirt by the amps and stuff and your playing. I think the second pic was Theloniuos Monster @ Bogarts. Don't have either pic but I remember them. Speaking of Theloniuos Monster... Do you have ANY idea how weird it was for me to randomly be flipping channels with some guy on my couch and see Bob on some VH1 Rehab show? It's very disconcerting...
BEEN HITTIN' THE HI-HAT AND RIDE WITH ME LEFT SINCE 1975 AT THE TENDER AGE OF 2! SEEMS BETTER TO ME TO KEEP IT OPEN HANDED,THAT WAY YA' DON'T GET CAUGHT IN A DOUBLE-CROSS!!!
Your album was way ahead of it's time. I wished I had hung on to my old albums instead of selling them 20 years ago. Luckily I just won a copy of your album on ebay.
My very first concert ever! Around '84 or so? Olympic Auditorium, it was GBH, the Dickies, Raw Power, the Breakouts, and Plain Wrap. Plain Wrap was the first band to go on, so Plain Wrap was the first band I ever saw live. After that show, I knew I wanted to be in a band. It made me take my guitar learning more seriously.
