In the fall of 1992, Kyle Hayden, Brian Hough, Rob Searle, and Dave Smith formed a barbershop quartet called the Ripchords. The original idea was to sing valentines to raise money for the music fraternity on campus. Their first real gig was at Boston University and they sang barbershop and doo-wop classics. When Rob left school in the spring of 1993, the barbershop idea was scrapped and the three remaining members formed the Potsdam Pointercounts.
Following this transformation, the group grew quickly to become the premiere popular performing group on the SUNY Potsdam campus and through the entire North Country of New York. The first A Cappella Jam was held later that spring. This annual event brings a cappella groups from other colleges to sing and perform at SUNY Potsdam with the Pointercounts for a night.
The Pointercounts now are an award-winning group, bringing home the title of the ICCA Quarterfinal Champions in 2006. We would like to invite you to look around and message us with any questions you may have. (For more information about the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella, visit their website at www.varsityvocals.com/icca/.)
Our Misson Statement:
The Potsdam Pointercounts dedicate themselves to educating students of all ages about a cappella music and bringing the love of the arts into schools. The Pointercounts perform a variety of styles of music to engage the creative mind and spirit of students and adults alike through educational workshops and performances. A cappella music holds historical and cultural significance and the Pointercounts strive to make students aware of one of the oldest forms of choral singing. It is the mission of the Potsdam Pointercounts to create an atmosphere that is conducive to the student's ability to create and enjoy music.
We do tour to perform for schools and public venues of all ages. If you'd like us to perform at your school/venue, or for more information, please e-mail us at pointercounts@yahoo.com and we will get back to you with any information you'd like!
And, just as we planned, we will be releasing our newest CD in fall of 2008 to commemorate our fifteen years of a cappella singing! So be on the lookout!
Thank you for visiting our page! Though it is currently under construction, we invite you to check out our web page at www.pointercounts.org where you can find information about our gigs, a monthly Fan Newsletter, and information about purchasing Pointercounts merchandise (CD's, shirts, and more!).
