   About Powerpop!

Some young people in North Devon are bored with reading humdrum articles presented by the mass media, tired of hearing the same old sounds reverberating around local venues, weary of artwork that looks like corporate wallpaper. It came to us while sitting on a field, staring at the sun in an attempt to rekindle the fire in our eyes. The one that burned so brightly before we got alienated by popular culture - its fashions and soundtrack. It happened after a weekend of fantastic music away from home, sitting underneath the pitter patter of summer rain, half drunk and weaving pipe dreams of the actions we would take to empower ourselves. A pact was made. Powerpop! was born out of the urge to create.

What We Do Is A Magazine, Records, Gigs, and Exhibitions!

The Powerpop! Project Catalouge

OUT NOW!
*POWERPOP! ISSUE 2*
The long awaited second magazine from The Powerpop! Project features 56 pages of creative writing, photo-journalism and art/design over varied mediums. Content includes interviews with punk-folk renegade Babar Luck, electro pop hero Metronomy and pop-art realist Martin Grover, a review of the work of Chinese performance artist He Yun Chang, photography from the streets of Paris, the climate change demonstrations of London and a post office in Cheltenham, poetry and short prose based around cities, train stations, nationality and fairgrounds, while artwork is provided by the socio-political paintings of Thom Harris, the skewiff illustration/graphic design of My Secret Disco and the wonderful pen and ink works of Sushi Grass. Available in a hand numbered and packaged print run of 200 and split between two different front covers, Powerpop! Issue 2 is a refreshing blast of creativity brought to you with a lot of love and attention. Get it now from independant retailers in North Devon, Pure Groove Records in London and online for £3.

AVAILABLE TO BUY ONLINE NOW AT -

OUT NOW!
*POP002 - THE OUTFIT/UP PERISCOPE SPLIT E.P*
The second release from the Powerpop! record label will only be available with Powerpop! Issue 2, as a seven track, pink 10" record that accompanies the magazine. The Outfit play 3 tracks of angular indie-pop with a distinct disco edge, combining a jagged guitar, a rumbling bass and exploding drums. Sounding like a collision of Gang Of Four, The Cure and early Bloc Party, The Outfit play intelligent post punk that twists and shouts. On the AA side Up Periscope formulate an intense wall of sound from an electric guitar and a drum kit. Quirky time changes and noodlings descend into waves of static and mangled noise underpinned by manic drum beats that quickly turn from intricate to schizophrenic and back again. Like Shellac, Hella and Murder Of Rosa Luxembourg, Up Periscope smash post rock into pieces and come out champions. The record comes wrapped up in the photocopied imagination of Sushi Grass and is also strictly limited to 200.

Sushi Grass Distro Has SOLD OUT!

SOLD OUT!
*POP001 - THE SOMETHING SOMETHINGS' BLOOD EP*
The first release from the Powerpop! record label, The Something Somethings present a snarling ten tracks of racous punk rock, fusing rockabilly, ska and hardcore influences with neat melody and tight rythms in a sharp twenty minute blast. Whiskey soaked vocals snarl and scream over the top of two colliding guitars that smash into rolling bass and thundering drums. Coming across like a bare knuckle, bloody lipped version of Filaments, Restarts, Leftover Crack and Subhumans, The Something Somethings are boozed up and pissed off five piece that rarely finish a live show standing, their chaotic sound converting perfectly onto CD. Get in for £5 from independant music shops in North Devon, from gigs or online at myspace.com/pumpkinrecords.

SOLD OUT!
*CDRCLUB002 - POWERPOP! RECORDS SAMPLER FOR WINTER 2006/7*
This super short run of CDR's featured two tracks from out favourite bands, The Something Somethings, Up Periscope, The Outfit and Wow, She Must Be A Hundred Feet Tall. Released as a short showcase of our musical output, they sold at £1 and swiftly dissapeared.

SOLD OUT!
*POWERPOP! ISSUE 1*
Our first magazine came out in September 2005 and featured interviews with ska punk pioneers Capdown, spazz core upstarts The Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower and legendary subversive artist Gee Vaucher. Photography of the human body, seaside towns and random snapshots was also featured alongside poetry and prose about people, mixtapes, train journeys, and reality TV. Art came from the brilliant Squirrel Action Squad and Thom Harris, with a front cover by Dan Reeves of fakefrench.com. It was available for £1 and was in A5 format, selling out by the new year of 2006.

SOLD OUT!
*CDRCLUB001 - WHO PUSHED HYPERSPACE?/WOW, SHE MUST BE A HUNDRED FEET TALL SPLIT E.P*
Our meagre record releasing roots began with this CD-R that came cover mounted with issue 1. It featured charming recordings of the now defunct Who Pushed Hyperspace?, sounding like a teenage Bonny Prince, plucking haunting acoustic guitar notes from thin air while telling short tales of love and life, while Wow, She Must Be A Hundred Feet Tall! strummed meandering, quirky instrumentals that shone like melancholly stars. Each CD-R came in a hand painted sleeve.

PAST SHOWS + FUTURE PRESENTATIONS...
*...BANDS LOOKING FOR GIGS READ THIS*
In our short existence we have put on 14 shows, putting music into a variety of venues including a record shop, a village hall, a museum and a series of characteristic North Devon public houses. We really enjoyed putting on real bands with real credentials but also relished giving our friends their first chances to play music to people. Our parties induced kissing, dancing, crying, laughing and ginger bread men, alongside projections and art and good records. So it is with a lot of regret that we are not doing any more shows until further notice, which means we are really sorry to bands that have got in contact about getting a gig, or were planning to. It means a lot.

Please help us (the something somethings) and 2 sick monkeys both to get on to the bill @ Rebellion Festival, Blackpool (biggest UK punk fest!).
Your help would be very much appreciated...thanks.

All you've got to do is:
Go to Rebellion Forum register and post in our respective threads (they're both near the top) please.

Or even click This Link and send a message to the Rebellion myspace requesting us both for the Festival.

Or you could do both...the choice is yours ;)

Please repost (hit reply, copy all the text and post in another bulletin) and we'll love you forever...or at least til we've shot our load.

Cheers for reading

Coombeshead Studios

Coombeshead Studios

Dec 17 2007 10:27 AM

Coombeshead Studios are now looking to take on 2008 recording slots. If you are in a band and need a professional recording, we offer sessions at just £12.50 an hour on weekdays and £20 an hour on weekends. All this paid time can be spent recording - mixing and editing can be done afterwards at no extra charge. If you wish to arrange a session, please message us and we will give you a list of available dates. Check out our top friends for examples of the recording quality, and the ’music’ section to see who we have worked with!

We also offer CD duplication at between 75p and £1.50 per CD for most requirements. This gets you a case, a print directly onto the CD face (no stickers!) and inlays. Contact us with your requirements for a quote. Recordings do not have to be made at Coombeshead to qualify for this offer - if you already have recordings let us know and we can provide duplication for you!

We would like to thank all the bands who supported Coombeshead Studios during 2007. It was our busiest year ever at just short of 100 bands, and allowed us to spend several thousand pounds on some major upgrades, launching us from a low budget studio to a fully professional setup. We continue to offer our low budget prices but offer a greater flexibility of control and greatly improved quality!
