CAENUS AND THE QUIVER OF ARTEMIS has been described as a cross between historical fantasy and alternate history, as it depicts fictional characters living in real historical places. The fantasy aspect is woven masterfully as the gods of Ancient Greece interact with mortals in real and imagined mythological locales, much as they did in The Iliad, The Odyssey, and The Aeneid.

PRAISE FOR "Caenus And The Quiver Of Artemis"

    A FINE FANTASY
"Love is a powerful value to some, but can it be the most powerful? "Caenus and the Quiver of Artemis" follows Prince Caenus as he falls for a beautiful peasant woman, in a story set in Ancient Greece. But a ruthless fellow Prince will create trouble for him. "Caenus and the Quiver of Artemis" is a fine fantasy sure to give fans of classical mythology something to enjoy." -Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA)

    A NICE FIRST NOVEL
“The story is a blend of Greek mythology, love story, and adventure fiction in an historical setting. The novella includes a helpful cast of characters. In addition to the human characters, there is a pantheon of Greek gods and goddesses dabbling in the outcome of human events, each according to their nature. A nice first novel. Appropriate for young adults.” -Debra Spidal, Historical Novel Society

    TRUE LOVE
"With undeniable certainty, I can and will say, I have come to find a truly amazing attachment to the characters Caenus and Kalliste. The struggles Caenus must face to be with his true love are going to be more than rewarded by not only the Gods, but by the closing of the circle so to speak. Chris Ledbetter's passion is well pronounced in his characters and he has quite the knack for using his knowledge of Ancient Greece and the Gods to form a blissful union of fate, destiny, love and his passion as he allows Caenus to use each to push himself through his struggles to attain and fulfill his purpose. Are you kidding me right now people? YOU HAVE TO READ THIS INCREDIBLE BOOK!!! The best part about this is there is much more to come!!!!" -Cherie P. (New jersey)

    GREAT ADVENTURE INTO ANCIENT EVENTS
"It's a suspenseful and wonderful adventure into ancient belief systems and self-determination at war with fate. In following Caenus and his decisions and actions, not until the very end do we know the full consequences of trust, betrayal, overwhelming odds, and interference by the gods. Finding out is worth every page that leads the reader there." -Pat L.(Virginia)

    WELL WRITTEN
"My husband and I have both read this book and loved it. I love reading a book that I don't want to put down and this one fit the bill. Mr. Ledbetter has a way with words and paints each scene beautifully! I cannot wait to read the next book!" -C. Harlow(NC)

    INTERESTING STORY!
"You have created very believable characters and use description nicely. I think your work demonstrates strong writing with a story line that flows nicely. Well Written."-Deni S.(Colorado)

"I have always been a big fan of Greek Mythology. That was one of the reasons why I decided to read this book. I got involved in the story from the beginning. The plot was very good and it has a lot of suspense. Besides, I liked the relationship between humans and gods. I think the author did an awesome job. I really enjoyed the story. I can't wait for the next one."-Gisela R.(Virginia)

    REMARKABLE!
For a first-time author, Christopher S. Ledbetter brilliantly captures in words his imaginative story of "Caenus", as well as, bringing to life another example of early Greek history with exhilarating fantasy."-W. Gilbert(Virginia)

"This is truly a romance, and although subplots mist the true genre, I could definitely tell it was a romance and a good one at that. I am glad this book was good enough to have a favorite character of mine, but I am sad that it did not bring out the full potential of the other characters. I absolutely recommend "Caenus and the Quiver of Artemis" by Christopher S. Ledbetter to anyone that likes romance, but also others because there is a great deal of courage and adventure in this book also."-Dylan J.(Texas)

    EXPERIENCE ANOTHER REALITY
"Have you ever read a book that captured your imagination and seemed to grasp your very heart? Have you ever caught yourself inside the storyline, living the life of one of the characters, battling along with them as they face the unknown, and crying with them in the victory? If you are seeking a momentary escape into another place in time, another reality, or simply another great book to capture you yet again - buy this book. Well wrtitten in an almost hypnotic lure, I highly recommend you purchase this book for yourself and buy several copies for others!"-Wayne S.(NC)

The Story Was A Good One!
Overall, I thought the story was a good one. And, Ledbetter certainly offered suspense. I wondered how Caenus was going to avenge the loss to Makedon. I thought that the dream sequence to Hades was a nice touch. I was particularly interested in the centaur. I wondered about his background more than any other character. His is a story to be told. The rhythm of the story and the overarching themes of love and justice and the struggle one has to undertake to achieve one's desires were clear and well thought out. Golan's story might be an interesting one as well. Not that I wanted any conflict to come, but it is interesting that while he has been raised within the lap of luxury, so to speak, is he not bothered that that world will never really be his? Or will it? -Jeffrey H. (Washington D.C.)

About me:

In CAENUS AND THE QUIVER OF ARTEMIS, the reader is swept back to Ancient Greece when meddling gods walked among mortals. Caenus of Iolkos (modern Volos), an unassuming and undistinguished prince, sets out to prove his worth at an ancient contest of might and skill. While competing in Apollo's Tournament in Corinth, Caenus meets two people who alter his life's path; Makedon, a brash and ruthless prince from Neapolis (modern Kavala), and Adriande, a peasant girl from Corinth, who is not all she seems. Romance begins to brew as Caenus becomes smitten with the elusive Adriande, but she later unexpectedly disappears. The hands of the gods guide Caenus and Makedon toward a final showdown in the tournament, during which an unethical act is performed to secure victory... the genesis of what becomes a bitter rivalry fueled by bad blood. Tension roils to a fevered pitch when Caenus is later blindsided by a revelation he never could have seen coming. Caenus is unwittingly thrust into a set of events that test his faith, his mettle, and his love for Adriande, sending him to the farthest reaches of the Aegean Sea and The Underworld.

The OF KINGS AND GODS trilogy chronicles the maturation of Caenus, an unassuming prince in Ancient Greece, as he grows into his father's sandals and ultimately flirts with divinity. At its core, the trilogy frames the timeless philosophical question of whether or not our fate and destiny is of our choosing... or is it thrust upon us.

The main rites for Poseidon occured on the eighth day of the lunar month, eight being sacred to Poseidon (notice that Neptune, the Roman name for Poseidon, is the eighth planet from the sun).  Some people, especially sailors like myself, also observed a day afterward for sacrifice to the wind gods.

The main festival is the Maimakteria, where we prayed to Zeus Maimaktes ("The Blustering Zeus") in his aspect as the lord of winds, to be kind as we entered into our winter season. May there be only warmth and happiness on the breeze for you.

The Apaturia was the four day and three night autumn festival held by the Phratria, the associations of descent that functioned kind of like Clans, but would include people not related by blood.  Zeus Phratria and Athena Phratria were the manifestations of the god and goddess presiding over the events. This is the time of year when Phratria would induct new members with ceremonies and revelry: so much so that the fourth day was actually a day where no one worked because everybody was recovering from the partying!  LOL

It's no coincidence that many universities have fraternity and sorority "rushes" and inductions at this time of year, as their systems creatively emulate many ancient Greek activities and values.

I hope you get to party hearty with new true friends that will stand by you through the years.

My favourite celebration is, of course, Kharisteria or "The Thanksgiving" which began after the amazing defeat of the Persians at Marathon, a battle in which I was an officer as a young man.  Additionally, the month of September is when a united Greece finally defeated the Persians after decades of conflict in a pair of epic, celebrated three-day battles of which I was the architect of the land and sea defences: Thermopylae/Artemisium and Plataea/Salamis.  Please read my page about these important events where a small group of determined, committed, well-prepared people prevailed against incredible odds.  Never forget, there ARE things worth fighting to the death for.  There ARE.  Every noble and reasonable person needs to know what things are worth life to him or her.  What is worth it to you?

It seems really oddly timed when you consider that the summer months were the only time ancient Greeks went to war, as during the rest of the year, all warriors had family, fields, and flocks to attend to -- except the Spartans.  Every man had to pay for his own armour and weaponry too -- except the Spartans.  But reaffirming neighborhood and town affiliations and setting aside local grievances was important, as these were the men who would kill and die alongside you in the battlefield: fathers, sons, brothers, uncles, cousins, in-laws, friends.

Hang loose wit' da boyz in da hood dis month, make PEACE wit' da peeps.

I especially like the Aphrodisia, where the temple of the goddess of love is purified and special care is taken of the statues of Aphrodite (love) and Peitho (persuasion).  How much love and persuasion must it have taken for Europa to climb on the back of Zeus transfigured as a bull that swam the ocean, took her to a new land, made love to her, and begat the people of an entire continent! What was THAT pick-up line like? LOL

The Mounikhia is rather like a modern-day "birthday" celebration for the goddess, who was a twin of Apollo the Sun God.
Young girls led a procession, carrying decorated boughs, and women carried amphiphontes (means "shining all around") which were cakes with lit candles arranged in a circle. Sacrifices of female animals and rituals were performed at Artemis' temples, and people could leave personal offerings.
Didn't hurt if you left one for her twin Apollo, either, LOL -- you know how brothers get!
