Negril United Church
Negril, Jamaica
January 2009
Shared Hope International (SHI) has partnered with the Theodora Project of the United Church of Negril to build a Village of Hope for the at-risk and exploited children in the Negril area. In 2007, SHI funded construction of the Theodora Project Computer Centre which was dedicated and opened in October 2007 with new computer equipment provided by Soroptimist International of Stuart, Florida.
Vocational and remedial training through the Computer Centre at the Theodora Project will provide these students with a viable and marketable skill to ensure they do not become victims in the commercial sex industry in Jamaica or other islands.
Negrilis especially impacted by sex tourism which thrive in this tropical vacation environment. Many youth are pulled into the commercial sex markets to financially provide for themselves, and often their entire family. This has resulted in a high number of youth who cannot continue with traditional education and become more likely to remain susceptible to the commercial sex markets as adults.

Ghetto Child
by
Charley Anderson
"Vocalist has a nice even & smooth voice. The island feel really is done well also!"
"Melody is really, really good. Structure is fine and does really nice sectionalizing the song!"
Overal Comments:
Thank you so much for this track. This is a very nice riddim, with some great instrumentation. Lyrically, a nice job is done telling the story of the "Ghetto Child", and it flows together very good.
Vocally its a nice performance with the vocalist keeping his voice within range and keeping time with the beat nicely.
This type of track could definitely work well as an album track or on a nice compilation.
Something that people coud vibe out to yet, hopefully relate to back in the islands.
Musically its a very well put together song. Keep making this good music and sending your message to the people.
Thanks again for letting me do this critique for you. It was a really nice listen.
I hope to hear more from you in the future.

A few words from Charley in Bogota, Colombia
Charley Anderson is a prolific singer, songwriter, composer and producer of critically acclaimed and socially responsible Reggae-inspired music.
As one of the legendary members of the Two Tone Records Movement powerhouse group, The Selecter, Charley Anderson helped spread the steely sounds of the Caribbean throughout the UK and Europe during the ‘80s.
Charley has been involved in social issues throughout his career, working creatively through his songwriting to promote race and gender equality and human rights, raising awareness of the devastating effects of landmines, the plight of children soldiers, the destruction of the environment, and violence against women, among other issues.
After having performed in the US, Europe and Africa, Charley Anderson is back to promote his new solo album, Zero Time Project, a mix of popular beats infused with Reggae sounds.
Charley Anderson was born in Negril, Jamaica, but at age 11, he moved to Coventry, UK. “The first challenge was getting my hands on an instrument to play. I was lucky that my brother and Lynval Golding were best friends and rehearsed downstairs in my mom’s garage.” He gained his first stage and music experience by dee-jaying at sound systems in the Coventry area and then started a band with his brother and their friend, Lynval Golding.
However, as black musicians playing Reggae music, they encountered racism. It was difficult to find work at local venues and a recording deal was out of the question. “We would go out at night to enjoy a concert only to be stoned with giant pint beer glasses by the security guards, who, ironically, are paid by the establishment to supposedly protect you inside the venue, should anything go wrong.”
Fortunately, Charley persevered. He helped found the Two Tone Movement, a group of 14 musicians from Coventry, UK including The Specials and The Selecter. Two Tone’s first single, “The Specials Gangsters vs. The Selecter”, was a hit. The Selecter’s Album Too Much Pressure rose to No. 5 on the UK album charts and even to No. 1 on some European charts. “This Movement helped beak down the barriers that existed in the entertainment circle and turned out to be the most successful venture by black and white artists in UK music history.”
Charley says that The Selecter’s success didn’t change his life financially, but adds, “It was a great mental boost – like graduating with a triple Ph.D. on how to survive in music.” After touring with The Selecter, Charley focused on his own career. He toured Ireland with The Century Steel Band, and later moved to Mombasa, Kenya where he formed The Vikings Band.
While in Africa, Charley traveled to South Sudan and witnessed the country’s civil war first-hand. His experiences moved him to write and produce songs for the South Sudan Project, which was aimed at raising awareness of the Sudanese people’s plight. Through his music, Charley tries to recreate the war experience for his listeners. “Because I was physically there, I was able to create the physical reality of the war in South Sudan through my composition. You can hear the planes, the machine guns...”
Charley's musical career has been dedicated to raising awareness of humanitarian issues and speaking up for the vulnerable and oppressed in our global society—those who have no voice.“My songs generally are related to reality topics: love, emotions, the state of the environment, social issues like children soldiers, convention of the right of the child, women’s rights, HIV-AIDS, and current affairs.”
His friend’s mother once said that if everyone listened to Bob Marley, the world would be a better place. “She was 85 at the time, living in Kenya. Imagine that.” Obviously, Charley couldn’t agree with her more. In fact, some friends have affectionately dubbed him “Charley Marley.”
“Charley Marley” and his family now live in Colombia where he is working with Latin American and Caribbean reggae artists. He is re-launching his solo career with Global Management Limited, S. A. and Global507 Productions. Look out for upcoming performances and the release of his new album Zero Time Project.

Prodigal Son Flies 9,000 Miles to Return for
St Patrick's Day
Dublin, Ireland
March 17, 2009
Charley Anderson of the 2-Tone Ska Band, The Selecter, must have set a world record in his attempt to get back to his spiritual home of Coventry to celebrate St. Patrick's Day with traditional Irish musicians where he performed the song “The Fields of Athenry” (as he did for Nelson Mandela when invited by Irish Government on Nelson Mandela Day in Dublin to a packed Bar Eden in Hill Street, Coventry).
Charley flew from Bogota, Colombia to Dublin, Ireland, then onto Birmingham, England and was then driven to Coventry to meet the Lady Mayoress Caron Matchett and play his Pete St. John smash hit “The Fields of Athenry” with local Coventry Irish Society Musicians.

@ Methodist Central Hall (U.K.)
April 4, 2009
Whilst in the UK, Charley teamed up with Love Music Hate Racism and Compassion UK to produce an event to raise the profile of people less fortunate. A group of musicians from all over the world gathered to perform at his one-night only Gig in Coventry on Saturday April 4th, to help people the only way he knows how…through music.
Charley commented "I have been very fortunate and blessed in my life to work with some of the greatest musicians in the world. Our latest initiative, Zero Time Project, with the new single “Ghetto Child”, features one of the grandfathers of the Saxophone, Panama's own Carlos Garnett.”
Charley also brought with him from Latin America Isabel Escobar, “Miss Muffin”, from the Colombian Caribbean island of Providencia, a young talent fast on her way to being the next Shakira or Rihanna.

The Coventry Observer
April 9, 2009
Five yougsters who featured in an iconic photo with The Selecter bass player Charley Anderson were reunited with the musical legend at the weekend.
The picture, taken by city photographer Toni Tye in 1979 was featured in The Observer two weeks ago, and saw a crowd of young fans queueing up for Charley to sign his autograph after a gig.
Charley returned to the city on Saturday for a one-off gig at the Methodist Central Hall, where he once again met with Tracy Morgan, Craig Morgan, Marie Evans, Sue Evans, Dean Checkly and Deb Mottram for a reunion photocall.
The event promoter said: "After the original gig at Tifffany's in Coventry, the children had to wait 30 minutes to get Charley's autograph, and they waited another 30 years to meet him again but it was all worthwhile!
"When the picture went in The Observer, Tracy contacted us and she knew where several of the others were, then we tracked down Deb and right at the last minute we found Dean on a social networking site - he lives in Slough now but said he wouldn't miss this for the world and came straight up."

with Pete Chambers featuring an article on
Charley Anderson
As the mighty Specials get one step close to their reunion tour and that Special date at the Ricoh on May 15, 2-Tone fever continues to dominate the local music scene.
On April 4, 2009, four of the original Selecter made a bit of history and played a blazing set at a Love Music, Hate Racism gig in Coventry's Central Hall. This was the first time they had graced a stage together for 28 years! Also in attendance was the Original Rude Boy himself, Neville Staple. Charley Anderson was hosting the show to promote his Ghetto Child project. He was later joined on stage by former bandmates Noel Davies, Aitch and Gaps.
They turned the clock back some 30 years as they took us on a nostalgia trip with the songs James Bond, Danger, The Selecter and Too Much Pressure. It all sounded so good to be just a one-off, we now hope the reunion rumours are right, and pretty soon we shall see these guys on tour once again.

( WORDS CAN BE SO SIMPLE) backed by the HOUSE OF RIDDIM with a solid bass and wicked horn section and drums to rock with. A tune for the reggea music fan at its very best . This tune will make you get up and go and move you forword to a positive state of mind. www.myspace.com/houseofriddim Jamie, here's my HONEST opinion & comments.... "Words can be so simple...Actions..." YES, but MUSIC also speaks louder than words....& thats EXACTLY what this tune does. From the intro chants of "LION....LION!", you get the feeling of positivity & strength from the word GO! The bubbling riddim track is met with uplifting vocal vibes from Mr Irie. A tune aimed at those who talk 'round di ting' & don't seem to put talk into motion, this song hits the spot. A vibesy tune to fill the air with as much punch as ALBORO
