Red Shift was formed in the summer of 2003 when Tom Sandahl, Quin Kirchner, Matthew Golombisky, and Matthew McClimon began playing steady gigs at Cafe Brasil and the Funky Butt. In the two years following its inception, Red Shift performed steadily in New Orleans, honing a repertoire of original compositions.
Red Shift completed its self titled debut CD in April of 2005. After a very successful release party at the Dragon’s Den during Jazz Fest week, Red Shift was poised to become a force on the New Orleans scene.
However, in August 2005 Hurricane Katrina destroyed the homes of the band members forcing them to relocate. Tom moved to Portland where he quickly became active performing with other displaced New Orleans musicians. The Matthews moved to Chicago, where they were recently joined by Quin. Red Shift will reunite mid February for performances at the Portland Jazz Festival and a trip down the coast to Humboldt County.
