Influences
The Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation is the oldest community development corporation (CDC) in the United States. Founded in 1967 through the efforts of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and Jacob Javits, our mission is to be the catalyst for the progressive improvement of the quality of life for the people of Bedford Stuyvesant. We carry out this mission through economic, cultural, educational and social ventures that both revitalize our communities and serve as pioneering models for distressed communities nationwide.
At the heart of Fulton Street is one of Bedford Stuyvesant's most familiar landmarks -- the 300,000 square foot Restoration Plaza, owned and managed by Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation. First built in the 1970s, Restoration Plaza retains some of the original shell of the historic row houses and a former milk bottling plant that stood on the property.
In addition to housing Restoration's administrative and program headquarters, Restoration Plaza is a major destination for education, commerce, and culture in Central Brooklyn. It is home to the Billie Holiday Theatre, Skylight Gallery and the Restoration Dance Theatre, and plays host to weddings, outdoor concerts and community events on its outdoor plaza.
Restoration's Center for Arts and Culture (CAC) is the umbrella organization for dynamic, high-quality and multi-faceted cultural programming in Central Brooklyn. Our goal is to offer the best in arts education, pre-professional training, and performance and presentation, drawing on the skills, talents, and cultural assets of Bedford-Stuyvesant artists and facilities. CAC currently comprises the Billie Holiday Theatre www.thebillieholiday.org, Youth Arts Academy, the Skylight Gallery, and Choreoquest.
