As a lot of you know by now, the Rewind Selector link has gone down. Because we are not in charge of the site that hosted the album, we don't know if it can be put back up there again. However, we are looking into hosting the album somewhere else on the net. We'll keep you updated here about the future of RS.
Also, we are kicking around plans for a brand new re-release. It would include even more new tracks, bringing the count over 102. We'll keep updating this section of the page.
You can listen to some VERY rare Sublime tracks on Youtube here! There's guaranteed to be some stuff that you haven't heard before!
The purpose of this Myspace page is to give fans an opportunity to learn more about the music that influenced Brad Nowell of Sublime. We will be uploading Sublime tracks mixed with the songs that Brad either covered, sampled, or took lines from. Some of the Sublime songs are present on the official albums, and some are only available through unofficial releases.
Here is the mission statement written by Matt Maguire, the creator of the Rewind Selector compilation.
Rewind Selector Mission Statement:
"Rewind Selector is an album that is loved or hated. Some people cry foul over the liberties that Sublime took in their sampling and mixing of sounds. I am not alone when I say that I love it. The “rub-a-dub blender” that is Sublime shows that they were a sound creating machine, extremely prolific, and diverse in musical taste. They certainly had their own sound and were able to incorporate music that would otherwise be dichotomous (Minor Threat -> George Gershwin).
"The type of question I hate to hear is “What bands sound like Sublime? Ever hear Pepper, O.A.R….?” That is the wrong perspective and only leads to following derivatives of music, simplifying music to pop-Sublime – any band with a crooning voice and a taste of surf-guitar. It’s far more important to ask “What bands did Sublime sound like?” – which will move you up in your musical knowledge and broaden your chance for discovery. Rewind Selector attempts to rewire the biggest fans of Sublime into bigger fans of music, teaching them where Sublime got its roots, and hopefully finding several more favorite bands for each person who takes the time to listen.
"Rewind Selector is more of a project than a bootleg. It began in the 90s by a guy who went by the moniker heLTa on the Sublime board at www.skunk.com. There were 14 tracks including a track by the Vandals covering Sublime’s “Ball and Chain.” True, that track is out of place, but I respect the original creator of this album and have left it in intentionally through the years. Thanks must go out to many who helped and many who researched. In particular, Sean (aka Agent4TwentyR) compiled one of the most detailed lists when everyone around him was just thinking to themselves “Wow, I recognize a lot of Sublime songs as partial covers or full of samples.” Without him, I wouldn’t have had the energy to knock out all of these tracks. The 36 track and the 56 track versions of Rewind Selector were made by me in 2000 and 2001. A million times I told myself I’d eventually create many more and had made lists of some as I came upon the originals. Unfortunately, I spent more time linking the songs and noting similarities than actually creating until Vince messaged me and offered to do some leg work. I taught him how to merge the tracks to make them sound like the ones I had created and he took it from there. Without him kicking me back into gear, these tracks may have been left on the shelf. Extra special thanks to Juhani over in Finland for supplying some of the rarer tracks -- even from vinyl -- for free."

Here is a brief summary of Sublime's history. (Thanks, SublimeSpot!)
"It's been a long and wild ride since SUBLIME played their first gig back in the summer of 1988. Any local scenester will tell you they were there, and that it was this performance that ignited the infamous "Peninsula Riot" of Long Beach in an explosive July 4th engagement. SUBLIME, once the "below average garage punk band that every kid wants to play his party," has steadily escalated from backyard beer buddies, into a prestigious musical entity. Their underground credibility has landed them slots with everyone from The Melvins and The Vandals to Firehose, HR of Bad Brains and Eek-a-Mouse. They played the "bar-b-que" band on the LA stop of the Butthole Surfers-Stone Temple Pilots "Endless Bummer" tour.
"Sublime's recording history began in early '92 when they teamed up with Long Beach's legendary SKUNK RECORDS to create a cult masterpiece '40 oz. TO FREEDOM.' Two years, three vans, and five tours later, the CD has sold in excess of 30,000 units.- without a distributor! The "40 oz" record is still charting at the top of most local alternative retail charts two years after its initial release. Front man Brad Nowell contends, "We practically distributed the thing out of the trunks of our cars." Sublime's new release, 'R0BBIN THE HOOD' sold over 2,000 units in less than two weeks.
"Mixing an aggressive blend of thrash punk ethos with ska and dub rhythms, SUBLIME creates their own blend of sonic definition. "Hurtling hard-core punk passages are just the punctuation, not the entire grammar, of a band that also took significant cues from the reggae of Bob Marley," proclaims Mike Boehm in the LA Times Calendar. SUBLIME is on a mad mission of sound, utilizing samples off of everything from old Minutemen records, hip-hop fanfare, and conversations with street denizens, to just plain old bong sessions in the garage. Both albums were recorded for under $l0,000. That they didn't even bother to court the major labels says much for their refreshing, iconoclastic stance. The albums each contain nearly 20 tracks of Sublime's genre jumping "shtick" Some tracks on the new CD were recorded at world famous Westbeach Studios. Others are strictly econo-core 4 track home recordings, invoking the d.i.y. approach of say early Beastie Boys.
"SUBLIME have developed a nearly fanatical base of followers since 1989. SUBLIME is not just a band, but a direct representation of a culture inherent to Southern California's beach cities. SUBLIME is a style and a vibe encompassing music, attitude, and alternative meets hip-hop, and surf-skate fashion which remains most apparent in the young and growing audience which the band attracts at every show. Theirs is a definite "scene" taking place at a SUBLIME gig, This scene knows the words to all the tunes, and relates to the many musical voices of this versatile trio. SUBLIME is the perfect musical accompaniment to adolescence, just ask your kids."

On Ocean Mist, after Level The Vibes, Brad starts singing something like "...she was a starchild, oh no dundundundun she went faster...in my weakness and in my strength..."
I have no idea what song or artist this is taken from. I've searched everywhere but can't find any reggae or dancehall song named Starchild or anything like it.
