On July 7, 1989- 181,337 disgusting humans came out into this world already hungry and dying. In the suburb of Gilbert, Arizona, all-American, mac ‘n’ cheese with cut up hotdogs, Rian James suffered stigmata before most kids could recite their ABC’s. Turned on by a man named Julio to the glory of Interpol, Rian played bass in wonderkind band The V Label throughout his middle school career and drums for moon( )spods, an anxiety-laden, early indie rock creation greatly influence by Modest Mouse, Pavement, and Built to Spill, and later did a brief stint of guitar work in My Feral Kin. Rian James then sold his drum set for an acoustic guitar, leaving Arizona, a lucrative position in the floral industry, and his girlfriend (right before Valentine’s day) for California. Living in a basement in the Happy Valley, Rian self-produced six E.P.'s, one full-length album (all on a borrowed 8-track recorder) and played many shows with bands like Little Wings of K Records, Dear Nora, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Paul Baribeau, Ghost Mice and other like folk and acoustic acts. After high school, Rian returned to “The Sunny Side Up State” to attend The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences and study audio engineering, occasionally craving circuit-bending to further manipulate the reality of sound. Dissappearing to Chicago and spending his spare time searching for Jeff Tweedy on the streets, Rian took an engineering internship at a studio. Sity Liphe rose out of the fake blonde hair-dye and cheap domestic beer soaked college scene of Isla Vista, California, playing local shows with friends sevendayweekend and travelers Man/Miracle. Standing somewhat awkwardly with a 0.946 liter bottle of lemon-lime Gatorade next to a little wooden stool, the kids in a local garage watch this bespectacled chain-smoker, unaware of the brilliant and totally original indie singer-songwriter in front of them. But as soon as Rian starts to sing the whole room goes silent and every single eye is staring, unblinking. Amazingly poignant lyrics sung with an original vocal styling and passion, Rian James has captured every possible thought these teen-agers and 20-somethings could possibly fathom. Whether playing catchy chord progressions on a stolen acoustic guitar or playing Sunset Rubdown-esque guitar riffs on electric, Rian James really is art. Every bit of him.
