RJ's Interests
|
| General | Music. Music. Music. I also enjoy travel. I am blessed with a wonderful family and many great friendships. I have a particular interest in regionalism in America - specially music but also food and culture in general. | | Music | Both kinds: Jazz AND Blues. Seriously, I also dig Soul Music, Doo Wop and a few things that fall between the cracks. When it comes to Jazz I am into it all from Louis Armstrong to Sun Ra and everything in between. With Blues, I dig mostly Jump type stuff like Louis Jordan and T- Walker but also Muddy and Jimmy Reed and Wolf.... Ray Charles was a genious. Bands with horns will always have my heart. You gotta dig Duke and Count. | | Movies | All sorts: Art House fare to mainstream stuff. I really enjoy a good story so I mostly watch dramas with a rare comedy thrown in. I like films by Woody Allen, Spike Lee, Kevin Smith, Jon Favreau & Vince Vaughn and many others. As for recent movies, I thought "The Solosit" was very good. I'm not an action guy, except when bored and watching bad TV on cable and it could be anything! Watching movies is my main activity that isn't music related but I do have a favorite Jazz movie, which is 'Round Midnight. As for documentaries I just saw one about Chet Baker which was quite interesting. I also saw one about John Trudell that was quite good too. Fellow Michigander Michael Moore has made some memorable documentaries,of course. I really want to attend his Film Festival up in Tarverse City.
If you dig movies like I do, check out: http://imdb.com/ | | Television | I enjoy crime dramas like all of the L&O shows but its hard to keep up with them all now. My new fav is Anthony Bourdain which my brother Greg turned me onto. I have seen a show called "Beer Nuts" a few times and enjoyed it. Now I have a DVR and REALLY dig it. | | Books | All of my reading is music related. In my youth I read about philosophy and spitituality. I subscribe to numerous jazz & blues mags including Jazztimes, Offbeat, Cadence and Living Blues. | | Heroes | Duke, Trane, Louis Jordan, Ray Charles, Mingus, Johnny Otis, Basie and T-Bone, Sun Ra. |

RJ's Blurbs |
About me:
I would say that I am best known as a drummer/bandleader that manages authentic Detroit Blues singers like Alberta Adams. Over the years I've also managed & backed Johnnie Bassett, Odessa Harris, Cee Cee Collins, Joe Weaver, Gino Parks, Stanley Mitchell, Kenny Martin, Sir Mack Rice & many more. More recently I have been leading an organ trio with Ralph Tope (guitar) & Dale Grisa (organ). Trumpeter James O'Donnell & I co-lead the Planet D Nonet, our space-age swing band!
|
Who I'd like to meet:
Really anyone that digs this music! Also, Marisa Tomei, Amy Sedaris, Julianne Moore and Jennifer Westfeldt (who I saw on Grey's Anatomy).
