About me: Roger C has been working as a DJ for over twenty years, spinning records at many different types of venues around the world. Since April 2005, he has been living in Barcelona - djing locally, and using it as a base to play around Spain and the rest of Europe.
He has played at a huge variety of events, from full-on dance clubs to squat parties and raves, from one of Sydney's leading restaurants to bamboo shacks in the jungles of Thailand. From backyard barbeques in Bondi, to prestigious music industry events, like the International Live Music Conference and Australian Music week. Festivals such as the Quart Festival in Kristiansand, and Urbanfunke & Gold Diggers in Barcelona.
In 2007 alone, Roger C played well over one hundred DJ sessions, in Spain, Switzerland, Norway and the UK, and has been the opening DJ for a many of todays' finest funk & soul artists - Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, The Bamboos, Sweet Vandals & the James Taylor Quartet.
Since leaving the UK, nearly ten years ago - Roger C has lived & worked in many cities around the world - From Camden Town to Brooklyn, Hackney to Hollywood, Madrid to Melbourne, Wellington to Koh Panang - There are few places left where he has not dragged a weighty bag of vintage vinyl.
MUSICOLOGY Roger C tries to offer a wide and eclectic mix of styles, within his DJ sets, depending on the venue and the event. The music he plays draws broadly from the last fifty-years of black music history: Deep Funk, Raw Soul, Jazz, Rhythm'n'Blues, Hammond Groovers, Afrobeat, flavoured with a little Reggae, Funky Movie Soundtracks and a pinch of Latin Boogaloo. He tries to maintain an equal balance of 60s / 70s classic & rare tunes, with new releases from the contemporary funk scene.
So you'll hear some JB's, The Meters & Marlena Shaw but also The Quantic Soul Orchestra, The Poets of Rhythm, New Mastersounds and fresh tunes from the modern Spanish scene. New music from labels like Freestyle, Unique, Daptone, Tru Thoughts, Ubiquity, Record Kicks and re-issues from Jazzman, Vampisoul and Soul Jazz.
Roger C can tailor his DJ sets to suit most types of audience and location - downbeat, low-slung with more of a jazz tendency, for cocktail / lounge bars, for those who just wish to sit & relax. Or full-on driving funk, soul and floor shaking r'n'b / boogaloo, for the party people who'd rather dance all-night.
FIGHT THE POWER
Whilst living in Sydney - Roger C produced and presented his own radio show "Fight The Power" for nearly three years, playing funk, soul, jazz & hip-hop. Broadcast locally on Eastside Radio 89.7fm, it was eventually syndicated by the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia and transmitted by satellite across the entire continent.
THE SUNDAY JOINT
Starting in 1997, Roger C has been responsible for the promotion and hosting of a club night, The Sunday Joint - which has relocated with him to different cities over the years. It began at the Vortex Jazz Bar in Stoke Newington, London, with himself as the resident and other local DJ's and live acts as guests. The same principle was applied when he relocated to Australia - and The Sunday Joint was hosted at the Well Connected Café in Glebe, Sydney.
Since October 2005 - The Sunday Joint has been up & running in Barcelona. Now located at Local Bar (Born) it provides a regular platform for both local and international visiting DJs, who otherwise would not have an opportunity to play in the city - which is so heavily dominated by electronic music styles. The Sunday Joint has built up a strong following of friends and funk fans, and has been responsible for many spin-off parties and events.
GROOVIN' BARCELONA
In 2007 - Roger C teamed up with two other local DJs - Fred Spider & Turmix to create the Groovin' Barcelona project. Along with a lot of other music fans in the city, they felt that commercial house, techno & minimal music, had gained such a dominance over Barcelona's club scene to the complete exclusion of all other styles - that something should be done to offer an alternative.
At their first event in June 2007 at Sala Be Cool, they featured 22 Barcelona DJs all playing 15 minute sets of funk, soul, jazz, latin, Brazilian, broken beats, nu-jazz & many other styles, which have been seriously under-represented in the cities nightlife scene. It was very successful and since then they have been producing a regular event every month at different venues around Barcelona.
SAMPLE SOURCING Roger C has frequently been asked to contribute sample material from his record collection for various recording projects - most noteworthy was the debut album from MUDBONE"Fresh Mud" (2006) produced by Dave Stewart. Mudbone has sung with the like of Bootsy's Rubber Band, P-Funk All Stars, Herbie Hancock, Prince, Afrika Bambatta & Bill Laswell.
OTHER STUFF Roger C is also a member of the We-Kidz DJ team, put together by the Nuggets Club at Barcelona's Apolo 2... he also plays regularly in Madrid at El Junco, Tempo Club, La Via Lactea, Groovie Bar & Bambalam Cafe....
