Bio
Ruby and the Vines fronted by vocalist/bassist Binisa Bonner, fuse influences as diverse as rock, jazz, afro-beat and reggae. The line-up is completed by guitarist Greg Sanders (Rhythms of the City) and drummer Ben Assiter (James Blake's drummer), who complement Binisa's soulful vocal delivery and melodic bass lines with complex, colourful grooves. The group is a classic product of London's uniquely eclectic and multicultural music scene. //////////////// Formed at SOAS University in 2010, Ruby and the Vines' sound stems from Binisa's distinctive compositional style, which uses melodic bass-lines as the musical root for her songs. Ruby and the Vines debuted at Celebrating Sanctuary festival, hosted by BBC London in June 2010, being hotly tipped by Max Reinhardt (The Shrine, BBC Late Junction) as a "wild, hot and about to happen new trio". The band went on to play an eclectic mix of venues across London, from the Bloomsbury Theatre through to The Luminaire, supporting internationally acclaimed acts such as Dobet Gnahore and Carmen de Souza and gaining a strong live reputation for infectious Afro-funk with a post-punk bite. /////////////// In June 2011 Ruby and the Vines released their debut EP, 'Red Storm', with it's catchy title-track receiving national airplay on BBC Radio 1 (Gilles Peterson's Worldwide show), BBC6 Music (Don Letts and Tom Robinson), Xfm (John Kennedy), as well as various online stations. As a result of the popularity of 'Red Storm', the band were invited to perform at Glastonbury Festival, Secret Garden Party festival, and at the Queen Elizabeth Hall Front Room for London African Music Festival. They also performed live for Jazz FM Live, Resonance FM, SOAS Radio and were featured as one of MyVillage.com's 'Artists of 2011'. ////////////// After the buzz of 2011, Ruby and the Vines focused on writing and recording new material, taking their sound in a new direction by incorporating elements of psychedelic rock and using a wider range of vocal styles and harmonies. ////////////// Now in 2013, they are set to release their eagerly anticipated version of Nirvana's classic, 'Heart-Shaped Box'. The single will be a departure from the style of the 'Red Storm' EP. Instead of melodic bass lines, Afro-influenced guitar and drumming which has been compared to Stewart Copeland's, the arrangement of 'Heart-Shaped Box' is by contrast, minimal. It draws on hip-hop beats, whilst referencing grunge music, with distorted guitar in the choruses. The version is a testament to the band's versatility and ingenuity. The talented trio Ruby and the Vines continue to evolve. -

Sounds Like
Andy Snipper (Music-News.com) says "This is a band with a huge potential... Binisa Bonner is a stunning bass player with a fine, soft and subtly sweet, voice and she makes an arresting frontperson, with her sinuous moves and wide smile... she is ably supported by guitarist Greg Sanders with his afrobeat and reggae licks and drummer Ben Assiter who plays some of the most sparse and simple drums I've heard in ages. I have always believed that it takes talent to play it simple and Ben is the proof... they don't sound like anyone else around at the moment... very definitely one to watch for all the right reasons." ////////////// "...for once I was stuck for viable comparisons... they're off on their on trip" Howard Male //////////// "Binisa Bonner, frontwoman of RATV steals the show with her Florence Welch-styled vocals". Time Out //////////// "…mesmerizing…" MyVillage.com
