Sean Wagner's music has been compared to Spoon, Pete Yorn, Elvis Costello, and Death Cab For Cutie. Combining a pleasant voice with captivating rhythms, strong hooks and melodic instrumentation, Wagner's songs pull the listener in and don't let go until the last note.
Sean Wagner formed and fronted the Boston pop-rock band Fallback Crush. After playing shows at some of the best venues in Boston and New England, Sean moved to Portland, OR to write, record and form a new band. Wagner released his debut EP, Long Lost Photograph, in 2008. Wagner played shows in support of the EP with an east coast tour including a stop at in New York City's MEANY Fest in October 2008 and across the west coast for the remainder of the year. Wagner followed up in August 2009 with the full length All The While and a date at the International Pop Overthrow Festival. The lead track, Time Will Tell, has already been featured on Portland's 101.9 KINK.FM and 94.7KNRK too. Wagner is following the release with an east coast tour in October and shows on the west coast to follow.
"On All The While, Wagner's songs shine through with the pop sensibilities of Spoon and Elvis Costello. The former of those examples is very apparent on his song “Time Will Tell”. A raucous mixture of horns, upbeat hand claps and playful lyrics, the song is about as contagious as any could be.
From a purely songwriting stand point Wagner has the very rare ability to write ridiculously catchy songs that refuse to leave your mind long after you’ve stopped listening. Songs like Let’s Go”, “Boston“ and "Warning Signs” can make your aunt tap her feet while being the hipster’s guilty pleasure. It’s the grey area that many artists wish they could tap in to. " Hoyt Emerson, This Heart Will Burn Right Out
"Like Ted Leo’s airy voice glued to Ray Lamontagne’s horn-filled hooks, Sean Wagner has a certain voice-meets-brass magnetism." MARK STOCK, Willamette Week
"Wagner released his debut EP, Long Lost Photograph in 2008, and follows up this month with the full length All The While. Wagner’s lead track, Time Will Tell, is an upbeat, lilting waltz with horns and is a great piece of folk/pop songwriting. It has already been featured on Portland radio powerhouse KINK, and Wagner appears set to build on the critical and popular Indie success of Long Lost Photograph." Wildy's World
"The Dave Matthews Band moved folk music ahead in the ‘90s and Wagner seems to want the reins in the 2000’s."
Susan Frances, Absolutepunk.net
"Portland, Ore. singer/songwriter Sean Wagner's latest EP, Long Lost Photograph, beautifully showcases his songwriting skills. Wagner captures the beauty of acoustic rock with a light and happy vibe, and Wagner’s melodic writing is easy to follow. Relying on the time-tested techniques of catchy choruses and catchy melodies, Wagner has produced five first-rate songs on Long Lost Photograph." Dave Boodakian, Performer Magazine
"Long Lost Photograph is reminscent of Elvis Costello." The Portland Mercury
"If falling in love had a melody, it would sound exactly like the keyboard line in Sean Wagner's "I Can't Tell You." With a sound reminiscent of the softer side of Pete Yorn mixed up with John Mayer. the five songs on Long Lost Photograph feel instantly familiar. It's been a while since someone new explored them with such an artful blending of summery lightness and heartbreaking intimacy.
This is music to be listened to on the beach, in the park, or on a long drive with the windows down and the stereo up. Sit back, relax, and indulge in a daydream about that one perfect summer, that one perfect lover, that one perfect, sun-drenched, frozen-in-time day. So maybe you can't go home again—you can sure as hell sing about it."- Lisa Marshall
