About me:
Who I'd like to meet:

Student/Farmworker Alliance (SFA) is a national network of students and youth organizing in direct partnership and solidarity with farmworkers to eliminate sweatshop conditions and modern-day slavery in the fields. We understand our work as part of a worldwide "movement of movements" for economic, social and ecological justice. We organize closely with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), a membership-led community organization in SW Florida comprised largely of Latino, Haitian, and Mayan Indian immigrants working in agricultural and other low-wage jobs throughout the state.

Only farmworkers can speak for themselves. SFA is dedicated to working with farmworkers for change, but we will not act on their behalf. Instead, we take our lead from the workers themselves. This affirms a belief in direct action and direct democracy where people and communities act through their own power to control and change their own lives.

Join us this September 10-13 for our 5th-annual Encuentro, an unforgettable weekend of strategizing, relationship-building, training & reflecting on the Campaign for Fair Food, our work in solidarity with the CIW, & our shared work for social justice & social change.

The opportunity to meet face-to-face at this year's Encuentro will be integral to our organizing as we map out how to take the campaign to new heights and how to make SFA a stronger and more sustainable organization as it approaches its 10-year anniversary. So come on out, whether you're an SFA "old-timer" or just beginning to get involved.

Click here for more information, including how to apply!

UPDATE!

Bon Appétit becomes first food service company to commit to "Dine with Dignity!" Check out the SFA website for all the details.

Without question, the Campaign for Fair Food is slowly changing the dismal reality for Florida farmworkers. Yet, after eight years of our campaign, seven high-profile farmworker slavery cases since 1997, and six of the world's leading food retailers having agreed to work with the CIW to improve conditions in the fields, Aramark, Sodexo and Compass continue to stand on the sidelines, arms crossed.

Take action to "Dine with Dignity" today!

Check out these great videos featuring SFA & CIW:

¿Y Ahora Qué? (CIW + proyecto autogestión)
A 16-minute on the 2007 Truth Tour & CIW's victory over McDonald's. Featuring an original song about CIW performed by Rage Against the Machine's Zack de la Rocha & Tom Morello at the 2007 Truth Tour’s "Concert for Fair Food." Contact us for a free hi-res DVD of this documentary. (great for film screenings!)
[trailer: english | hi-res trailers: english / español]
With These Hands (CIW)
A new short featuring the hands at the base of the $100 billion fast food industry.
¿Quién Sigue? (Austin Indymedia)
A video report by the Austin Indymedia crew from the 2006 Truth Tour’s march on McDonald’s.
Immokalee: From Slavery to Freedom (Pan Left)
A favorite from the Taco Bell days & good primer on CIW history.

NOW with David Brancaccio (PBS)

The Battle Fields (2005) - A 15-minute, Emmy-nominated documentary about the success and future of the CIW and SFA after the Taco Bell boycott.
Pay Day (2007) - A follow-up to the 2005 segment, "Pay Day" covers the historic victory against McDonald's (Hint, the story follows an good report on the collapsing housing market. You'll either have to watch that first, or wait for the entire file to finish downloading. Be patient!)

Contact us for a DVD of all these videos, along with guidelines and pointers for giving effective and accurate presentations about the campaign in your classrooms and community spaces. These are a great way to build a local base of support!

And when you're ready to take action, look no further than the SFA website for ideas, including creative protests, manager letters and postcard drops, plus other materials to get you started!

The UFCW Scholarship Program application will become available in one week.

Based on our research among UFCW members, scholarship programs have tremendous value for young workers. Redesigned for 2008, the UFCW Scholarship can now be utilized to better serve our members and act as a tool to organize.

Several scholarships of up to $8,000 will be awarded to UFCW members and their dependents. The scholarships are limited to UFCW members who have been in good standing since January 14, 2007.

The application will be available online only from January 15-March 15, 2008.
For complete eligibility requirements and information on how to apply, please visit www.myufcw.org

Website: http://faithandsocialism.org/

The Faith and Socialism Commission affirms peace, equality, justice, inclusion, and ecological integrity. We link the wisdom of our spirituality with political activism. We come from many religious and spiritual traditions, but we are united in rejecting an exploitative capitalist economic system and embracing a socialist vision. Guided by the religious and spiritual beliefs that nurture us, we honor the sacredness found in people of all races, ages, abilities, sexual orientations, nationalities, faiths, and gender identities. We lift up a society free of all forms of exploitation and discrimination.

Season Greetings from statesofunrest
They don’t know it’s Christmas
It’s not Christmas in the Third World and they don’t care
They’re too busy being raped by our capitalist nightmare
A million fingers scrape about in the rubble
So we can feel secure in our privileged bubble
They don’t need a jolly Santa no Coca Cola lie
Our fat celebration’s just a spit in their eye
It’s not a happy Christmas it’s not peace and goodwill
It’s just another year of death capital gain capital kill
Rampant disease massive Aids culture
World banks hover like blood lust vultures
Centuries of depravity from civilisations
Carving up the riches of innocent nations
So stuff your belly fat let the drinks run free
Cos Africa is dying under a Joshua tree
Another freezing starry night another barren landscape
Another fat hand grabbing at a Christmas cake
They don’t know it’s Christmas don’t defend the lie
Don’t pretend to feed the world while you watch them die
There’s no baby in a cradle but there are thousands in graves
Starved to death by the greed of the rich and depraved
It’s not a happy Christmas it’s not peace and goodwill
It’s just another year of death capital gain capital kill
It’s not a happy Christmas it’s not peace and goodwill
It’s just another year of death capital gain capital kill
