Sounds Like
"Let's give a hand of applause to the band. C'mon everyone let's give a hand of applause to Simien the Wheel. They keepin' awesome week going."
"Zach you kinda sound like Cat Stevens"
"Dude, Tory does a mean Billy Corgan!"
"It kinda reminds me of the Beatles, but in a good way"
"We should call it 'Ska-folka'"
"There's a part in that one that reminds me of Queen. And I like it!"
Suppose you were to see Simien (the Whale) walking down the street. Would you stop to say "hi" or would you put your cell phone up to your ear and act like you were busy? Chances are Simien wouldn't mind, he would still say "hi" to you.
An ode to the lovable losers and journeyman socio-philes in this world, Tory Peterson and Zach Guy have encouraged the inclusion of wallflowers and would-be prom kings and queens through their mix of indie/alternative and break-beat rock. With a do-it-yourself attitude, lo-fi aesthetic, and lyrics built around the headlines you normally once-over, the duo gives the little guy a chance to show his best moves in the middle of the floor.
Be sure to get to know Simien (the Whale). Read his diary entries, see his pictures, write to him, friend him and get your friends to be his friends. Once you see past his scruffy, unkempt appearance, his enormous dorsal fin, and his pile of Transformers collectibles, you'll find a kind-hearted individual with a heart that truly is the largest in the animal kingdom; the kind you don't come across everyday.
Local Resonance airs every Friday from 11am-noon on 88.1 WYCE (Grand Rapids). Visit www.wyce.org/local for archived shows including Simien the Whale's appearance March 14th.
No, I haven't heard it yet as I have been swamped with reviews...I heard it was fabulous...When payday comes, it's mine... What do you think of it?
PS I finally turned in 1982 back to the WYCE library, review in tow....so any day now it should be ready for airplay:) I will definately be playing Mason County Boy, my favorite track on the album...
Man, did I get lucky last night... I randomly stopped into Sazerac Lounge and witnessed the genius that is Simien The Whale. Not to mention The Drive rocked out as well. Thanks for my $4 back, but I would have gladly paid in full:) Cheers, Nicole LaRae
