Wind in our sail.
Rudie can't fail.
The Skatomatics gonna get famous.
There's a punk rock angel watching over us.
- Punk Rock Angel
The year was 2002. In the smoke-filled back bar of the Railway Club in Vancouver, two men drank their pints and planned their future. Rob, a brave young soldier fresh off the boat from Chilliwack, sat back and asked, "Well, what are we gonna do now?"
His compatriot was a mysterious man. Truth be told, he was more than a man. He was a Dude among men. The Dude Man fired up another smoke. He waved to the barkeep for another round. He leaned in and spoke, quietly. "Why not have a good time?"
In that moment, The Skatomatics were born. Over the years that followed, they would grow from those original two to the six-piece ska/punk/rock band they are today. They jammed in a storage locker, banging out new tunes inspired by bands like The Police, Sublime, King Apparatus and The Clash. They gigged furiously in bars, clubs, rooftops, festivals, weddings and even once at the fabulous Marpole Curling Club. In these years they would earn their reputation as "Vancouvers Sweatiest Band."
In 2004, the Skatomatics released their first independent EP - Skatomatics for the People. It climbed the charts and reached the number 2 slot on CITRs college radio chart, outplaying groups like indie-kings Modest Mouse, all-Canadian buzz-band Broken Social Scene and even that fella Jack White beat up from the Von Bondies.
2006 saw the Skatomatics bring their sound out from the underground. First, the band released their new full-length CD: High Maintenance. Next, they sold out to the Man. That summer, the Skatos became the first Vancouver band to license a song for use in a Telus commercial, exposing their music to a whole new audience of Regis and Kelly fans.
As time rolls on, so do the Skatomatics.
What does the future hold for this band?
Fame?
Self-destruction?
A big limo full of strippers and coke in the sky?
Only the Dude Man knows.
"Vancouver is experiencing one of it's Ska revival frenzies. The Skatomatics are in the vanguard of this movement, and anyone fortunate enough to have witnessed one of their energetic, not to mention sweaty, live shows can attest that these guys are the real deal."
