SKYE STEELE QUINTET, as captured on our 2007 CD "late bloomer." is Harel Shachal on reeds, Ben Cassorla on guitar, Mike Savino on bass, John Hadfield on percussion, Satoshi Takeishi on drums, and Skye Steele on violin.
Lately around New York we're playing with Josh Myers on Bass, and Nir Felder on guitar. We also like it when Andrew D'Angelo joins us, whether its for a song or the whole night.
other friends who've graced the bandstand of the SSQ include Jordan Perlson, Ben Monder, Rich Stein, Richie Barshay, Solomon Dorsey, Matt Darriau, Ben Holmes, Mike Effenberger, Christopher Hoffman, Jonathan Finlayson. We love them all. We also love you.

“It’s clear that this crew is ready to stretch out in a million directions, and have tons of fun doing it…. Steele’s fiddle darts in and out of the oddball structures with great panache and rhythmic assurance…. Steele’s fabulous tone and inventive solo sense didn’t just happen over night.”
--Cadence Magazine, July 2008
"rustic and wordly" --Nate Chinen, New York Times
“Eclectic and Graceful”
--Time Out NY, June 2008
"There seems to be little limit to what Skye Steele can do"
--Ernest Barteldes,
The New York Press
"the most fantastic violinist... the type of musician who made the violin transcend beyond all the classical music stereotypes into an ephemeral, personal space."
--Christopher Lehault, FreeNYC.net
There's a long story, and it's pretty good. It's on my website if you want to read it. Some of the more famous people I've worked for have been: Willie Nelson, Rufus Wainwright, Steven Bernstein, Cyro Baptista, Vanessa Carlton. There are a few who've been extremely important to my development: Nation Beat, Anistar, Vampire Suit, Howard Fishman, M-Lab, Ben Cassorla. The bottom line is this: I Really love playing music. I really really love it. I wouldn't trade my job in for any other in the world. Here's the short version: I was lucky enough that my mom put a violin put in my hands when I was still sucking on sippy-cups and didn't let me put it down when I was a bratty teenager, so that's what I play today. I moved to New York when I was 17 and played in the trains for a while to get by. I went to school for Jazz and made some friends. Some of them took me to Turkey and Israel, and I learned some things. Some of them took me to Brazil and I learned some other things. Some of them stayed in New York and wrote some crazy music and made me play it so I learned some more things. I've toured with Middle Eastern bands, Swing bands, a Maracatu band (what the hell is Maracatu?!?), a Klezmir-Ska band, a Ragtime band. So now I've written some music that reminds me of a lot of my friends and a lot of the places we've hung out in. I've learned that as long as we mean what we say when we play, we have the Mystery at our fingertips. Making music the best way possible is a moral imperative. It also feels way better.
