No, there is no Stephen; The man behind the music, and the independent label they're on, is front-man Rockwell Ryan Ripperger. Rockwell began his recording studio in 1995, with a small car fund his parents had saved for him. With a plan of owning an independent record label and being a producer, he never thought it would result in his own band. However, when he and some friends recorded some of their own music in a high school recording project titled Doubting Thomas, the album took on a life of it's own and spread across the state like wildfire. After high school, Rockwell recruited a few more friends to help record the first effort under the name Stephen Speaks, No More Doubt. It far surpassed it's predecessor's success when it made iTunes top 100 independent sellers in the US, and stretched as far as the Philippines, where it was declared platinum by distributor Warner Music after two singles topped the national charts for over three months. Speaks' followed it with a sold out tour for over 20,000 people, a video for Passenger Seat that reached number one on MTV Asia and MYX charts, and a press frenzy.
After nearly signing a record deal in 2003, Rockwell's passion for independent music led him to keeping the band on his own independent label, and moved his studio back from Nashville to his home in Tulsa, OK. From 2003-2005 Rockwell kept busy balancing Stephen Speaks' performances with recording/mixing many artists including The Hero Factor, Ryan Tedder (front man for OneRepublic), Jackson Waters, and hundreds of other artists, as well as releasing Speaks' sophomore album, One More Day.
While Rockwell's producing career was his focus, Stephen Speaks continued to grow in popularity and in 2006 released previews of their new music on MySpace, where the demo track for "Disappear" received over a million plays within months, reaching the top 10 most popular independent artists on MySpace. Symptoms Of Love hit iTunes in 2008, and has already taken a strong presence with two singles making Speaks' top five sellers on iTunes.
With over a hundred concerts already performed in 2009, Stephen Speaks is busier than ever and has a fresh batch of all-new songs for their upcoming album, due in late 2010.
