The Constant is a powerpop group from New York, lead by singer/songwriter/guitarist Steven Baggs, who's a voice right out of the late '90’s with his pain vocals and rocking tight sound. More precisely, he sounds like Eagle Eye Cherry and has the growl of Dave Grohl, but don't hold it against him. The Constant is a little more scruffy than Third Eye Blind and lay somewhere between innocent powerpop and the Goo Goo Dolls rootsier edge. Assorted synthesizers ground the band in 2009, but that '90s sound is unmistakable and arguably the closest thing powerpop has had to a full-fledged moment in the sun since its '70s heyday.
Baggs, a self taught guitarist and vocalist, was born and raised in New York. He first landed major exposure and made his presence known in March of 2004, when one of his songs was entered into the nationwide Clear Channel Radio - Be A Radio Star contest. Out of over 250,000 entries, his song was voted into the Top 7 by fans all over the country and won him a Major Label Demo Deal. As a result of the nationwide publicity, his songs were heavily requested and played on many of the largest radio stations across the country, highlighted by Z100 and their Clear Channel affiliates. With his music reaching new levels and an overwhelming outpour by his devoted fan base, Baggs was given numerous invitations to appear on New York City's own Z100-Morning Show and was interviewed by guests such as Christina Milian and Avril Lavigne.
Wanting to back himself with the best musicians he could find, Baggs methodically assembled his band. On lead guitar is Mark Williams, a fresh face that has already lived several musical lifetimes, even before turning 18. Williams' incredible ability to electrify crowds combined with his diverse musical influences have molded him into not just a virtuoso, but an innovator capable of performing flawlessly on stage while still exhibiting savvy and creativity in the recording studio.
Known for his powerful style and precise timing is drummer Lawrence Turco, who brings high intensity hits every time he sits behind the kit. Playing since the age of 9, Turco has developed the ability to channel his personal emotions through his hard playing, making him the perfect match to Steven’s high energy live shows.
Quickly building a strong following and buzz in the New York scene, it was In Spring of 2007, The Constant entered NADA Recording Studio to record an EP with Producer John Naclerio (My Chemical Romance, Senses Fail, The Ataris). The EP, co-produced by both Naclerio and Baggs, is packed with upbeat power anthems influenced by the writing of late 90's and who’s sound has been called a mix of melodious pop and organic rock.
In November of 2008, they recorded their latest EP, a compilation of timeless ballads, at The Pilot Studio with producer Rob Freeman (Hidden In Plainview, Hit The Lights). Blending the best ingredients off of pop's musical spice rack, Steven writes songs about past relationships and life experiences which serve up an astringent view of love, loss and everything in between. Each song is filled with sharpened hooks toughened by innovative guitar riffs and harmonious vocals that will settle into your head and stay there.
