Stuart Bogie was born in Evanston, IL the younger of two boys in a warm and loving home. He studied music at the the Interlochen Arts Academy and the University of Michigan, focusing on clarinet and bass clarinet. He co-founded the group Transmission with Zachary Mastoon (aka Caural) in 1991. With the group Antibalas, he has functioned as conductor, saxophonist, and composer, touring to over 15 countries and performing in major festivals around the world. He has been the recipient of a Meet the Composers grant, and has written, produced and performed music for film, dance, television, and toys. He is a full time member of the children's group The FunkeyMonkeys (with a long run at the Daryll Roth theater in Union Square), The Sway Machinery, and leads the group Volney Litmus in addition to various solo performances. Currently he is making a record with "Superhuman Happiness" and is performing monthly at Brooklyn's Zebulon, workshoping sounds for the next one!
He has shared stage and/or studio with the Wu Tang Clan, Medeski Martin and Wood, TV on the Radio, Celebration, Zak De La Rocca, Massive Attack, Burning Spear, Sinead O'Conner, Gomez, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, The El Michaels Affair, Baaba Maal, Bat for Lashes, DJ Logic, Brian Jackson, Angelique Kidjo, Brigth Black Morning Light, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Foals, the Get Hustle and choreographer Bill T. Jones.
He now lives in Brooklyn and enjoys studying music and improvised theater, camping and watching the muppets.
