STUFFED is a plush food show extravaganza. The exhibition will open at Munky King Melrose on November 15th from 7pm – 11pm and will be on display through December 2nd.
STUFFED will feature plush food by many acclaimed plush designers including:
12PUNT3 (Netherlands), Anna Chambers, Bytedust (Netherlands), Crystal Chesney-Thompson, Cutesypoo (Canada), Dan Goodsell, Dog Bone Art, Erick Scarecrow, Funfun, Heidi Kenney, I Heart Guts, Jelene Morris, Kate Sutton (UK), Kenta Shibusawa (Japan), Kika (Switzerland), Lazysmash, Marion Hawkes (Ireland), Michelle Valigura, Miskellaneous (UK), olive47, Planet Tokki, Reneé Lawter, Shane Geil, Serena Kuhl (Australia), Shawnimals, Snaggs, Spök-spök (Sweden), Steff Bomb and T&A. As well as other original art by: Amanda Visell, Blinky, Fawn Gehweiler, Kii Arens, Lou Pimentel and Shawn Wolfe.*
A feast for the eyes, STUFFED will create an extraordinary meal made of plush stuffed friends. The show will be comprised of 3 main sections. The first is “The Feast”. The Feast will center around a plush turkey designed by Shane Geil of Purple Flavor and will be rounded out with lobster, sushi, pizza and many more mouthwatering food favorites. The second section is the “Dessert Cart” which will be spilling over with sweets, cakes and pies made of delicious looking felt and fabric. The third section is the “Grocery Store” which will have bountiful baskets of all different kinds of colorful plush foods that can be purchased and taken home starting on opening night! The Grocery Store will house fortune cookies, apples, doughnuts and more fun treats.
From the über-realistic cupcakes made by Kenta Shibusawa (Japan) to the cartoon-esque bread and butter of Heidi Kenney of My Paper Crane (USA) STUFFED lampoons the traditional American holiday food spread and combines humor with art.
Plush and food themed art will be for sale the night of the event and throughout the exhibition.
STUFFED is presented by Munky King and curated by Sarah Jo Marks of DKE Toys. Ms. Marks gathered over 25 of the most amazing plush designers to participate. Like a pot-luck, designers were asked to submit their ideas and Ms. Marks coordinated the plush dinner menu.
In 2003, Patrick and Chanda Lam opened the first designer toy store in Southern California. From a quaint little shop in Chinatown LA, Munky King ( www.munkyking.com ) has grown into two locations in Los Angeles, the second on Melrose - a sleek modern store and gallery known for its art shows, artist signings, toy releases, and other special events. Now Munky King produces its own line of designer toys with both established and up-and-coming artists such as Luke Chueh, Thomas Han, Amanda Visell, Nathan Jurevicius, The Pizz, Kii Arens, Dave Pressler, and Yoskay Yamamoto. The Los Angeles Times hails Munky King for "launching a more contemporary revolution against conformity - this one aimed at the fiefdoms of mainstream art and mass-produced toys."
Curator Sarah Jo Marks is vice president of DKE Toys ( www.dketoys.com ), one of the largest designer vinyl and art-toy distributors in the world, exclusively representing over 50 companies, artists, and designers. Ms. Marks began her personal collection of plush food and food themed art almost two years ago and couldn’t be happier about putting together STUFFED for Munky King. STUFFED comes on the heels of DKE’s hugely popular platform show The Vader Project ( www.thevaderproject.com ).
