The confluence of Western Jazz and Indian Classical Music is one of the most fertile and vibrant movements in contemporary music. Sundar Shor (Hindi for "Beautiful Noise") is a new group comprised of Western and Indian musicians versed both in Jazz and the Indian tradition. Just back from their Indian tour, founder members of the group: Brooklyn resident Russ Spiegel (guitar) and DUMBO homie Carl Clements (reeds) perform a variety of jazz standards and Hindustani spiced originals. Augmented by bassist Gary Wang, drummer Sunny Jain and Narendra Budhakar on tabla, the band covers a lot of musical ground. The music is especially compelling when Clements plays his bansuri - the Indian classical bamboo flute.
“A touch of Hindustani inflected the entire performance….The scorching solos drew applause every single time.”
- Arhan Sett, The Times of India
Beautiful, contemplative, and powerful arrangements...and from the heart of Brooklyn, no less! You just made a new fan--- All the best, and Cheers! Wendell Peek
