Reviews for Syntaks: Awakes (Benbecula may 2006)
"... Awakes is one of the most refreshing scores of electronica ... heard in a long time; respecting the foundations of the sound, but building onto them with skill and an individuality."
Igloo Mag
"A divergent mixture of crunching beats, micro-samples, live drums, processed vocals and dreamy guitar floes, the divine atmospherics prevailing on Awakes will appeal to those with a soft spot for Eighties indie-pop legends The Cocteau Twins, who appear referenced throughout, not to mention Slowdive, and then local heroes the Boards Of Canada, to whom Isaac is surely a musical nod. Graciously, this is all done in the best possible taste and should ensure a large raft of new fans navigates gently towards this Portobello-based imprint before the year is up."
The List
"...a really successful and quality release"
Sutemos (10 of 10)
"The hushed drone of Rise follows a similar pattern to the Mastermind theme then peters out amidst break up in their flow. It flickers, rustles and bursts, an ideal introduction to their twitchy post-rock that is both isolated and extrovert. With the drift and twist of Kilgore Lives they increasingly bring together psyche-rock and glitchy electronica in addition to the swoop of their crystalline guitar scapes. The oriental dusk of Stars Fell On The Shore is a breathtaking highlight."
Vanity Project
"This is electronica from Scotland's consistently reliable Benbecula label, and a top class album from Denmark's Jakob Skott, who darts from clicky intimacy to vast sound-fields with ease. Along the way it takes in micro-mechanical cranking, smothered vocals and multi-layered moments of brightness. This isn't an album with one sole direction; the ten intricately structured tracks vary in both mood and length. The journey begins with Rise, where dreamy Eno-like guitars are set against eroded beats, and the finale of In The Wake glues multitudes of layers together to achieve a grand climax to the album, although the end result is a bit overwhelming. The standout track here is the gorgeous Respirator Birth, where fuzzy snatches of dub meet weeping strings. A true delight to appreciate."
The Skinny
"If youre not afraid of an acoustic setting, youve definitely got a winner in Syntaks Awakes. Benbecula is pushing forward with the help of their talented roster."
Having released a couple of tuneful albums with theAudiologist and Soni Jimm since my last LP, "Fear of Mathematics", Section 27 Netlabel brings you "Wrpdata”, containing 14 tracks full of chunky, breathy and some would even say pleasantly broken breaks, some good-time-mind-fuck glitch, a few (thankfully blissful) orchestrated mixes featuring the talents of Pinklogik and theAudiologist (also acting as co-producer on this release) respectively, and ends sweetly with some beautiful spoken word poetry by the lovely aussie Cindel Waddington.
A delight on the sensory organs from start to finish, "Wrpdata" is available now for *free* download. Licensed by Creative Commons.
Hoy! Here is a chance to get an exclusive peak at my remix of Fujiya & Miyagi's 'Dishwasher' which is the b-side to their next single released in April.
