The Chauncers are a spirited and distinguished collective of
Cincinnati-based musicians—"chancers" and romancers, ramblers and
gamblers, notorious for a combined musical pedigree that's been
everywhere, man. Of course there's the music, without which little of
this would have any point: since no Chauncer blueprint existed, the
reckoning was open to anyone, and (albeit lo-fi) roots-inflected
tromps, straight-down rockers and organ-riddled ballads all rose to
the surface fairly quickly.
Here's how it began: In late 2007, those who would become Chauncers began writing and recording songs into beaten-up 4-track and dusty
Dictaphone recording devices. These musicians included Mike Lamping
(Heartless Bastards), Bobby Gayol (Moth, the Virgins), Lisa Walker
(Wussy, Haywards), Kendall Davis (Ditchweed, the 13s) and Billy
Catfish (solo, Lonesome Tumblers). Who else would have the fortitude
for this? You'll all want to hear what choir-trained newcomer Anne
Radakovich adds to the sonorous textures, and the stories she could
tell. Although the band was borne sans lofty aspirations, it soon
became apparent to all involved that, hey, these songs we've got
aren't half bad. Which is a really good place for a band to start.
Rehearsal continued though the winter months, and in no time the
coterie took to the stage with much aplomb (big words, I know, but you
should've been there!). Homemade videos already complement most of the
Chauncers' home recordings, and footage is currently being collected
for a documentary-style feature about their "official" recordings, now
underway.
As I said, the Chauncers are in the midst of studio recordings and
plan to release their debut in late 2008. And I'll see you out there, in the meantime.
Yours truly,
