Interview With Tammy Faye Sinclair
Q: What persuaded you to start doing drag?
A: Well, we will thank my dear friend, Sara Dazie for that one. I had known Sara for a few years prior, however. Granted, she was in “boy form”. We both were going through some personal issues at the time. You know how those men can be, ha ha. To be honest, I had to interest in even doing it at first. I was always the type that thought boys had no business wearin’ dresses. It was something that Sara always wanted to try, and she persuaded me to do it with her.
Q: Can you describe your first time?
A: My first time?! Lord, which story do you wanna hear, hunny? My first time doing DRAG was actually with another friend, the very talented Eve X. She had persuaded me to dress up for my annual Halloween party. Course, in February I started performing officially with Sara. Neither of us had a clue when it came to makeup. We rushed out to Walmart and bought like 80 dollars in “real girl” makeup. And bitches, let me tell ya, Covergirl does NOT cover boy! Well, we went home and began to turn ourselves into two of the scariest bitches this lil ole town ever did see. ROAR!
Q: Where did you get your start?
A: Well, Sara and I both performed for the first time at the now defunct Driftwood Lounge in Huntington, WV. We did a lot of open stage and eventually started doing a few weekends. We certainly had a time in that old place! Sara moved out of town shortly thereafter, and I started doing shows at the Stonewall. I will admit that was one of the best choices I ever made. I learned so much from Kelly Hart and of course Tami Wynotte.
Q: How did you come up with the name Tammy Faye Sinclair™?
A: Well, it was originally Tammy Faye St. Claire. I really can’t remember who came up with the name, but I think it was Eve X during my Halloween party. I come from a religious background, so it just seemed appropriate. Also, at the party we broke out a song called “Are you Ready for a Miracle”. Ha ha. Eve and I rocked out to it when we did a show for the audience. Doing a blasphemous bobbin’ gospel number then became a tradition at my annual party. Ha ha! We then decided, Tammy was hardly a “St.”, but more of a sinner. The DJ at the Driftwood always used to introduce me as the “girl that put the “sin” back into “Sinclair”, so that’s how it took.
Q: Tammy, you had a reputation for doing a lot of religious numbers when you started. Can you tell us about that?
A: Well, Julia Deville, the old show director at the Driftwood told me a while back that when I started drag and came out on stage doing a gospel number, she had half the bar complaining that he or she was offended. Ha ha! Course, I never expected that reaction. Like I already said, I was raised in a religious tradition around the “black churches” and the televangelists with pink hair. To me, they can be more theatrical than some drag queens. So, it just seemed funny. It never was meant to offend. I eventually decided to change my repertoire. In fact, you will seldom see me do a gospel number these days. Although, it still happens when the spirit moves this sista! Ha ha!
Q: What is your favorite bar/nightclub in the area?
A: This answer is easy. I have been to 9 states and my absolute favorite nightclub is Masque in Dayton. The gals/staff up there are so very professional and that’s what we really need in this industry.
Q: Do you have any advice for up and coming new talent?
A: Yes, I do. Stop. LOL Put the ratty fried wig back in your bag and go home. Half the boys doing drag these days really don’t need to be. For God’s sake! Be a sexy boy in the front row so I have something to lust after! IF you INSIST on doing drag, the key thing is to listen. When I started, I used to have a thing about taking my wig off. I would NEVER do that now. I became so defensive with Kelly when she told me it was unprofessional. She told me that one day I would understand. I certainly do! So, the most important things are to listen and have a good attitude. You will wear that Cover Girl and think your grand, trust me. You are not the grand diva. Also, if you are going to do drag and do it successfully, be prepared to spend some money or get ya a sugar daddy. Either way, your ass or pockets.. something is gonna end up being loose! Ha ha!
Q: What can we expect in the future from Tammy Faye Sinclair™?
A: I have been taking a little hiatus for a year or so, but 2009 proves to be the best year yet. I will be doing more comical numbers, as well as some themed shows. I also hope to spend some time this year traveling to some of my favorite clubs doing shows. I have made so many good friends in my travels, and I am way overdue going to see them all. I also plan on finding some talented gals to go with me for select special shows.
