My sound is unique. I am very diverese. From jumping on Akons "locked Up Remix" to doing tracks with Kardinal Offishall, to createing music for Dizzy Rascals, "Just a Rascal", introducing Sway to the world on my Cowboy and Indians remix of "Cowboy Film", going line for line with estelle, Remixing Ashanti and making her hot for the UK, to just riding the grimmiest Hip Hop, I can flip it, spit it and make it hot.
Born in Jamaica where he remained up to the age of 12 where he soaked up the local vibes and developed a passion for music. Upon moving to London music became his closest friend.
The big break came for Taz in 2004 when he hooked up with Dizzee Rascal to produce and co-write a track that would launch Dizzees career and provide him with his biggest record to date: ‘Just A Rascal’. The track received critical acclaim finding itself among the top 20 in the UK charts and going on to receive a prestigious Ivor Novello award nomination (previous nominees included Elton John and Coldplay).
Taz Ashanti remixes of ‘Rain On Me’ and ‘Rock Wit Chu’ proved to be hits in the clubs and sky rocketed up the charts to earn him more chart success and respect in the game.
As a result hip hop Mecca Def Jam head hunted Taz to be their first UK rapper to sign with the label. The result was the critically acclaimed album ‘Analyse This’ which featured the likes of Kardinal Offishal and Terri Walker.
Radio favourites such as ‘Only God Can Judge Me’, ‘Wish Me Luck’ and the top 40 hitting ‘Cant Contain Me’ were birthed whilst the track ‘Cowboy Film’ has gone down as a UK Hip Hop classic featuring Kardinal Offishal and revolutionising urban video in the UK. Upon masterminding the remix of ‘Cowboy Film’ he introduced the world to Sway and Bigz.
In 2004 Taz featured on the remix of Akon's world wide smash hit ‘Locked Up’ for the European market; he instantly took the track to a whole new level, assisting Akon in gaining the credibility he needed for the European market
In 2005 Taz parted ways with Def Jam by way of mutual consent and is now working his projects independently. He is currently busy in the studio adding the final touches to his brand new product while his return is highly anticipated.
Influenced and inspired by Stevie Wonder to Ozzy Osbourne. Buju Banton to Mozart. Notorious B.I.G to the Bee Gees – Hip Hop with an element of soul, mixed with innovation, creativity and heart felt expression. His rhyme style is a real social narrative. Commenting on the things he’s seen in his life and coming from a poor background so not all of it is pleasant; but there’s always a message in there.
He has toured with the likes of Kanye West and Sean Paul. Performed for Prince Charles at the Princes Trust concert on the same bill as Jay-Z, Beyonce and Alicia Keys. Has performed on tracks alongside: Akon, Styles P, Estelle, Kardinal Offishall, Graph, 40Cal, Farenheit, Blemish Blackstorm, Asher D, Blaxxx, Lady Sovereign and many others.
