   About TEARGAS (2002-2008)

Prior to officially calling it a day in August 2008, Teargas spent the better part of six years blowing the roofs off venues in Melbourne and the rest of the country with their crunching guitars, soaring melodies and powerfully intense melodic metal. The band built a solid, dedicated fan base, becoming one of Melbourne’s premier live bands.

Original members Al Gammie (vocals), Kyle Ross (lead guitar), Andy Fillmore (rhythm guitar) and Nick Blatt (drums) all went to high school together, and had been jamming in lounge rooms, garages, and at underage events since they were in Year 7. They formed a unique chemistry, and a bond that remained intact until 2002- this is when they all finished school, and decided it was time to get serious about the band.

Al was playing bass at this time, but was becoming increasingly unsatisfied with it. He wanted to give it up so he could concentrate on being the best singer and frontman he could be without compromise. The band needed to find a bassist who was not only a good player, but who could become a close mate, and part of the “brotherhood.” Enter Steve Cox, and Teargas was born.

The band honed their songwriting in the rehearsal room, and rocked any gig they could get- they had to get the name “Teargas” out there. After a year or so of playing their hearts out, the demand was there for a recording. It was time for Teargas to hit the studio and showcase their craft.

Teargas’ first EP “Crazy” came out in early 2004 to an overwhelming local response. The short and sharp 3-track disc captured early Teargas at its best- the songs were 80’s metal influenced straightforward, catchy, fist-pumping sing-alongs that won the affection of hard rock audiences.

In 2004, their local notoriety earned them some big International supports. First up they supported US hard rockers, Brides Of Destruction- the supergroup featuring Nikki Sixx (Motley Crue) and Tracii Guns (LA Guns) on their sold out Australian tour. They also toured the country with legendary American vocalist, Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie Malmsteen, Journey, Talisman) which the members of the band consider to be one of the highlights of their careers.

2005 saw Teargas gigging frequently and furiously- cementing their place as one of Melbourne’s top hard rock acts. The band would regularly pack out The Espy Gershwin Room with the likes of Airbourne, Electric Mary and The Deadthings. All seemed to be heading onwards and upwards for Teargas until bassist, Steve decided he was leaving the band. This was a tremendous blow for Teargas, as the bass player search proved more difficult than anticipated, and the remaining members became disillusioned and unsure about the future. Thus ensued a long hiatus.

During the break, the musical climate had begun to change. The band’s core songwriters and leaders, Al and Kyle had grown and changed a lot- new influences were making their way into their compositions. It soon became apparent that to keep them creatively satisfied, Teargas needed to evolve into a more of a metal band. This was not the ideal direction for founding members Nick and Andy, so after playing music with Al and Kyle since they were 12 years old, they decided it was time for them to amicably relinquish their duties in Teargas.

Though it was down to just the two of them, Al and Kyle vowed to continue the Teargas name. They recruited monster rhythm section Luciano Alvaro (drums) and Josh Andrea (bass), and after only one or two rehearsals, it was decided that this was the perfect line-up for Teargas Mk 2. It was during this time that the new sound was developed.

Although there were moments reminiscent of the old Teargas in the new songs, overall it was so much heavier, darker and more modern. The intensity of the material sparked a new enthusiasm within the band, and after rehearsing solidly for over 6 months, they couldn’t wait to get in the studio.

In February 2007 Teargas recorded their new material at Complex Studios with local producer, Roman Koester (The Red Shore, Deez Nuts, Picture The End). The band knew he could get the massive, heavy sound they were after, and they were right. The 5 songs recorded became the new Teargas EP “A Dark Obsession.”

“A Dark Obsession” encompassed a range of influences from In Flames to Metallica, Bon Jovi to Pantera. The end result was a strong modern melodic metal EP with infectious hooks, killer grooves and blistering guitar-work. The band members were so proud of what they’d created and couldn’t wait to get out and play it live. Only one question remained – How would the old school Teargas fans react to this drastic change in both their sound and image?

All looked great on July 7th 2007 when Teargas launched “A Dark Obsession” at their home ground, The Espy Gershwin Room. The crowd was packed with friends, family, and fans from back in the day- however; surprisingly it was the new faces- the younger fans that made up the largest portion of the audience. Teargas hit the stage soon after 11pm to a rousing response. It seemed they had nothing to worry about.

Teargas continued to gig solidly in support of the new EP. The shows were getting great turnouts and the band was pumped! However, tensions were increasing within the band, due to issues with their bassist. While Josh was an incredibly talented musician- his general instability was seriously affecting the morale of the band. After one too many strikes, Josh’s time in Teargas had to come to an end.

With shows booked through to the end of the year, the band needed a replacement, and fast. Former member, Steve Cox returned to Teargas to lend a hand on a temporary basis while they auditioned new bass players. In November, Danny Slaviero was recruited, and the band was sounding bigger and better than ever. Danny played his first show with Teargas in a headlining performance at Melbourne metal club, Switch in December 2007.

In early 2008 Teargas continued to gig with their new bass player. Although there were some standout, highlight shows, Founding members Al and Kyle were starting to become disheartened with some less than flattering gig turnouts- affecting the band’s self-esteem, and thus their passion for the music. It seemed as though the momentum surrounding “A Dark Obsession’s” initial release had dwindled, and the lack of faith on the part of the two founding members would not help regain it.

Kyle and Al were becoming more interested in going in an even heavier direction, but acknowledged that this may further isolate the Teargas fans- as they had already gone through a dramatic change in 2007. If the band was to change their sound again, it just wouldn’t be Teargas anymore- and in some ways, they really hadn’t been since 2005. Fact of the matter- the members had lost their enthusiasm and passion for the band, so in the interests of preserving their legacy, the decision was made for Teargas to officially disband after nearly 7 years.

Al, Kyle, Loochy and Danny decided that it was only fair to give everybody one last chance to see Teargas, so a Farewell Show was booked. On August 14th 2008, Teargas graced the stage for the last time ever at the popular Alternative club, Next. For the first time since 2005, the performance contained songs from their first EP- it seemed fitting to celebrate the band’s entire history at their official farewell. The band was tight and the vibe was fun, as the boys said their last goodbyes.

Undisputedly, Teargas made their mark on Melbourne’s music scene, however small by comparison. They were unique, passionate and a great live act. Hopefully many people will have fond memories of Teargas live shows, and both their EP’s for years to come.

Look out for Al, Kyle, Loochy and Danny with their new musical endeavours in 2009.
