Sounds Like
WICKERMAN 2007…Opening Friday's Summerisle stage are The Common Empire, local lads from Dumfries who earned their 45 minutes by winning the South of Scotland battle of the bands - with an emphasis on all things Indie Rock N Roll, inspired by Oasis, The View, The Libertines, it's a sound that's easy to enjoy as first rounds are ordered in at the Belhaven Best bar and the murky clouds slowly disappear. "How High" is the fans favourite that inspires the barrier-squeezing locals into action, and in the end the crowd look won. Fresh from his appearance and still visibly buzzing, I caught up with Common Empire frontman Chazz - looking every bit the rockstar in his unnecessary sunglasses - and he told me: "Now I know how Alex Turner felt after Glastonbury..."(skiddle.com)

Formed in 2005 The Common Empire are one of Scotland’s brightest new bands. Led by the pugnacious Chazz and filled out by the visceral sounds of Steven McKie and Andrew Rendall, and the solid punchy rhythm of Scott Malone and Stu Grant on drum and bass. Rock n roll and ska are the main elements of their sound. Based in Dumfries the Common Empire have developed a passionate following in their home town over the last few years. In 2007 they triumphed in the South West Scotland Battle Of The Bands competition and duly booked their ticket for local cult festival The Wickerman that summer. Their successful performance was the springboard that allowed them to take their sound outwith the confines of their own region and gigs in Edinburgh and Glasgow followed suit while an appearance in the final of the national Battle Of The Bands competition was another stripe to their armoury. They also had a little trip over to Italy representing Dumfries at a music festival in Cantu where they gained more fans farther a field. Ventures into the studio proved fruitful as their sound lent itself to comparisons with the layered sound of Oasis (Selling out/How High) and the spiky ramshackle output of The View (See that girl/Jack Of Spades). Word spread and support gigs to luminaries like the Mystery Jets, Joy Formidable and Detroit Social Club raised their stock higher. 2009 promises to be another exciting year for The Common Empire and their loyal band of followers.
