“Poetic, intellectual and engaging, The Ruby Kid not only produces great studio tracks but also pulls it off live. With rippling staccato delivery blended with smooth harmonic vocal support, The Ruby Kid and band show a maturity and understanding of the crowd way beyond their experience. The Winter In The City EP was a great introduction to the promise of this unit. And I'm eagerly awaiting round two.” - Iain Hodgson, BBC Radio Sheffield
“The Ruby Kid is one of the most controversially brilliant acts to come out of the Steel City. [He is] an honest voice amidst the waves of commercial drivel. [The Winter In The City EP] has the power to change opinions and the way we act.” – Lauren Peel, Sheffield Music Scene
“Like the Freewheelin' era Dylan, [The Ruby Kid] adopts the persona of a revolutionary prophet against the tides of mediocrity, particularly in 'Only One Victory', where the use of biblical and mythical imagery sounds not too far from Dylan's walk amongst the twelve misty mountains in 'A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall'. A startling rhythmical ability also makes the Ruby Kid compelling. The 'Pen/Sword Prophecy' is a breathless, sprawling scroll of rhyme and meter that would have made Ginsberg proud […] Ruby Kid's promise is however undeniable; his rhyming is self conscious, intelligent, flowing and at times totally compelling.” – Paul Lynch, Sandman Magazine
“It’s almost embarrassing to be so positive about something I’m reviewing, but I’ve never had the pleasure of describing a work of art as complete as [Winter In The City EP] before. It is intelligent AND heartfelt. It is of ‘the streets’ AND threatens to go beyond them. It commiserates in my troubles AND makes me glad to be alive.” – Adam Ford, Nerve Magazine
“Considering this [Winter In The City EP] is the first release The Ruby Kid has offered the public, it’s impressive just how mature the feel of this EP is. From track one the beats stay great, borrowing heavily from easy listening and jazz, never excessively aggressive […] While The Ruby Kid’s political views glare through on most tracks, they’re delivered with intelligence and subtly.” – Adam Stone, Red Hot Velvet
WHAT THIRD-PERSON BIOGRAPHICAL NARRATIVE VOICE SAYS ABOUT THE RUBY KID
The Ruby Kid is so named because his real family name is Rubinstein (it was changed in the mid-1930s to make it less conspicuously ethnic) and because red is the traditional colour of working-class politics.//The Ruby Kid is proud of his Jewish culture and heritage but does not believe in god and thinks religion is poison.//The Ruby Kid runs with a gang called the Alliance for Workers' Liberty who get their kicks making trouble for the rich and powerful in the name of international socialism.//The Ruby Kid was born in Nottingham, lived in London for a bit, and is now based in Sheffield but is an American citizen. His family emigrated there from Poland and worked in the garment industry on New York's East Side. He did not vote for McCain or Obama.//The Ruby Kid first started listening to hip-hop around 2001 or so, but it all was rubbish. He started listening to good hip-hop about a year later when he bought Aesop Rock's 'Labor Days'. He has not looked back since.//The Ruby Kid is not, however, an indie-rap snob and is just as happy listening to 'Illmatic' as he is listening to 'Fantastic Damage'.//The Ruby Kid believes that hip-hoppers who can't find value in other genres of music are dogmatists and thinks that folk music, ska and punk share a lot with hip-hop in terms of spirit.//The Ruby Kid plays the bodhrán in his spare time.//The Ruby Kid has been writing for as long as he's had the capacity to, and has been recording/performing since October 2007.//The Ruby Kid also owes a big debt of thanks to the cats who make his live shows worthwhile, which first and foremost must include Max Munday (demi-god of the double-bass).//The Ruby Kid would rather to listen to Bob Dylan than most mainstream rappers spitting.//The Ruby Kid will never "blow up", "break through", "go big time" and will probably never get signed.//The Ruby Kid raps for the same reason Percy Shelley wrote poetry.//The Ruby Kid can drop pretentious literary references with the best of them.//The Ruby Kid is probably a backpacker, an exponent of alt.hip-hop and a die-hard indie-rap head, but kinda resents all those labels.//The Ruby Kid considers the class war to be the only war worth fighting. Apart from the war against wack hip-hop...
