   About The Shadow Orchestra

Flyer Image “...ambient and sublimely haunting ...experimental and superb sets”
Susie Wild, Kruger Magazine

“ ...Listening to The Shadow Orchestra is like taking a wander through one of Escher's fantastically complex drawings, where an atmosphere of perfect order and symmetry temporarily evaporates to reveal a landscape of chaotic reverie.”
Damien Roach, 8i8 electronic event organiser at the 291 Gallery

“...The Shadow Orchestra is a collective capable of extraordinary and sublime things.”
ukmusicsearch.com

The Shadow Orchestra’s super-collision of percussive harp, crazed bebop drums, glacial guitar, shamanic cello and primal electronica creates a melodic cacophony as cerebral as it is soulful, in which listeners can celebrate the common ground between 20th century classical, pre-fusion jazz, and the joyous experimentation of early dance music.

The band is producer and cellist Chris Bangs, Kat Arney on harp, Dave Oliver on drums, Nick Siddall on guitar and Mary Erskine on Vocals and Keys, all of them possessing an innate ability to blend disparate musical elements into a pop aesthetic. From the oriental-influenced ‘Plucking and Bowing’ to the full-scale electronic masterpiece ‘Sweet as a Nut’, The Shadow Orchestra show their musical diversity by combining traditional elements and forward-thinking sounds.

The band formed three years ago, when Bangs had produced a substantial and impressive amount of material of his own. Wanting to escape the limitations of being a one-man-laptop show, he assembled a diverse and talented group of musicians to perform and re-interpret the existing material: Kat Arney’s experience as a classical and contemporary harp virtuoso, complemented by her formidable talents as a bass clarinet player, made her a perfect fit. Also recruited was Dave Oliver, whose love of experimenting with different musical styles grew from his previous involvement with jazz, classical and reggae outfits, and latest additions guitarist Nick Siddall and singer and multi-instrumentalist Mary Esrkine both of whom chimed perfectly with the Shadow Orchestra sound.

The band released their eponymous debut album in 2006, which was critically acclaimed as a creative homage of many musical influences, from the cerebral electronica of Aphex Twin, Four Tet and DJ Shadow to the polyrhythms of Ali Farka-Toure and Toumani Diabate, the emotion of Van Morrison’s early releases to the experimental compositions of Charles Mingus, Moondog and The Penguin Cafe Orchestra. The album received extensive radio play in the UK and Europe.

The band have become regulars at popular London venues Cargo, Luminaire and most recently played a sold-out gig supporting DJ Krush at London’s KoKo theatre. They’re set to release a new EP in autumn 2009 with plans for a full UK tour and festival dates to be announced shortly.

Videocrash 3!
with Hexstatic (live AV) vs The Nextmen (live AV)
plus The Anomolies + DJ Cheeba (AV) + more tbc
8 - 3 Sat 6th June '09
£15 adv
www.ticketweb.co.uk

For the third installment of the now legendary Videocrash, London's biggest and best dedicated Audio-Visual event, we have lined up a truly ground-breaking affair, with the undeniable kings Hexstatic and new challengers The Nextmen as well as some of the finest up-and coming talent in this, the coolest up-and-coming night-club experience.
Having absolutley killed it at the previous 2 Videocrash nights Hexstatic was an obvious choice to invite back to Koko, and in looking for an act to match up to them The Nextmen were a clear option, with their live showcase and excellent turntable skills. To make it all that bit more special, and to fit in with the theme of the occasion, Hexstatic will be providing a visual accompaniment to The Nextmen's set! Awesome. Throw into the mix the fruits of our quest into the world of AV to find some of the hottest new talent in the field, and the result is an evening that will blow Koko's bass-bins and your minds with a kaleidescopic mix of sounds and sights.
