Brother Tom (2:51)
Mark Elliott (2007 Mark Elliott Music, BMI)

Tom Dundee's damn canoe still sits on the rack here at my house. He wanted to keep it in Tennessee because he kept drifting out into the shipping lanes of Lake Michigan on his moonlight cruises! He always said he would be by to pick up the old Ouachita (wa-shitta as he called it).
I never believed him because I knew he loved Nashville and that giant heap of aluminum was just one more reason to make a trip down. Tom was killed on his motorcycle in April 06. I got a message from him on my machine about thirty minutes before his wreck. He said, "Brother Mark (he called everyone brother or sister) if you don't come visit me real soon, we're only gonna' be friends for five hundred more years." Ok - you gave me the title, so this one's for you "Brother Tom!"

- "and we're only gonna' be friends I fear, 500 more years"

I wasn't a close friend of Toms,My children were his age..but I admired him as a performer and artist man. But there was more: I can only give you my impression of him, as I saw and heard him: that those close to him were lucky to call him friend. I saw a quietness to him, humor, and never a touch of ego on stage, just pure love and respect for his music...happy to be doing it,as were his audiences.
I wish that he were still here so we could hear where he was going next, where his music journey would take him. There was a power to him as an artist, not one that hit you with a blast, but stilled you to listen, and brought you into his journey. He was much too young to go..and Having his music with us, is a gift.

.....Tom was a true friend and the best golf partner I ever had.
When Tom first came to Nashville he called me up to do his b&w headshot photos,( the photo in the Chicago times is the one) I told him we'd work things out on a payment. So I got back to him with the prints and we talked some more and then he said "I got a set of wilson clubs and 3 Arnold Palmer woods I'll give ya, it's a complete set man" and I was like WOW ,wilsons cool.... so Tom and I had a deal... from then on it was actually one of the best friendships I ever had in my life...(actually by the time the shoot was over we were friends)..

Every time we'd play at McCabes I'd always yell out at him across the fairway "Hey man I love these clubs!!" and he would yell back "Hey man I love my photos!!!" with that grin of his . Just one of many stories I have of Tom....I'm going to scan all the photos of him and put them in my myspace blog as a memorial ....
I'll post a link soon....

By reading all the newspaper comments all over the web and on here ,Tom truly was a very likable human being. He touched alot of lives....I never saw him get angry....If Tom wasn't your friend 5 minutes after meeting him then that was that persons loss....

I miss you man...

uncle tom's voice was always the one thing that made me fall asleep when I was little, singing to me some of my favorite songs, for example 'back yard' that was mine! The other day my aunt sent me a link to a youtube for Tom and I cried and loved every min. we need to put that link on here, so that not only can we remember the voice of a wonderful man but the personality that we all remember most! I LOVE YOU UNCLE TOM TOM! we miss you.

Tom:

Will NEVER forget you along with James Lee and Pamala Stanley, in you bathrobes, playing live on my show at KLRB-FM in Carmel. Then, by chance, running into you 10 years later, when you "special guested" with Bryan Bowers in the old ladies club building in Fortuna, CA. You were so special--from "This Old Take It Easy Guitar to This Fleeting Moment and Delicate Balance"--you are so deeply missed. Your music, your presence, your life. Please prepare the way for the rest of we "musicians of the soul." And hey, when you visit James Lee Stanley--say Hi for me!

For personal reasons, I've been thinking about "A Delicate Balance." The song's been running through my mind most of the day, so I came here to pay respect to Tom and let him know how much he is missed and how wonderful his songs still are.

Humble thanks for accepting my request to be a friend at this special site. Here’s my little story about Tom’s influence on me. I first heard “These Cowboys” from an artist I met online, Stephen Lee Rich. I was totally smitten by the story of this song. Stephen graciously helped me learn it and said that Tom would be thrilled to find out that there are still people around who want to sing his songs. I was so saddened when I heard this gifted soul had passed away but this song has made the rounds of my friends here in San Diego. Several people buttonholed me after hearing me sing it and made it very, very clear that they wanted this song. Stephen wrote me about Tom saying “He always said, "It doesn't do me any good to write them if nobody else sings them." I am proud he’s been introduced by me to people who never had the pleasure of knowing about him. Thank you, Tom, for touching my life and others with the beauty of your spirit.

Thanks for keeping Tom's music alive and out there. I'm honored to be adding one of his songs to my new CD. Though I didn't know him more than to say hello at a show, his music has been special to me since I was a teenager.

As we approach the first anniversary of Tom's passing, I have to stop and think about all the comments that I contributed to Eric Zorn's blog. I think I have maybe 4 entries, but the one that sticks in my mind is simply "My heart is STILL breaking." Tom was the keeper of Steve Goodman's legacy and now we are the keeper of his. His music will ring loud and clear for as long as we are here to sing and play it. I miss you Tom.
