GREAT LETTER PRINTED IN NEW YORK TIMES ON CARRIAGE HORSE BAN!
Horse-and-Carriage Cruelty
Published: April 11, 2008 To the Editor:
Public Lives: Battling to Retain a Touch of the 19th Century (April 4, 2008)
In “Battling to Retain a Touch of the 19th Century” (Public Lives, April 4), you write of “healthy, happy, citified carriage horses,” yet the A.S.P.C.A., the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which you call “the agency that polices the horse-and-carriage industry,” now seeks to ban the industry from New York City.
Why? Because oversight is obstructed by the industry itself. In December, a stable owner was arrested for attempting to bribe an undercover investigator to ignore violations on licenses and how they were displayed.
Are the horses happy? Consider the audit released in September and covered in The Times. It found horses lacking water, forced to stand in their own waste or endure hot asphalt. And according to Newsweek, New York City has the highest carriage-horse accident rate in the country.
Second, a stable owner, Ian McKeever, claims, “We hold New York City’s most important commodity in the palm of our hands: the tourist industry.” But horse-drawn vehicles are outlawed in London, Paris, Toronto and Beijing, and those cities draw visitors aplenty.
The coalition seeking a ban, which includes Friends of Animals, wants New York listed among cities that keep only the humane and respectful aspects of centuries past.

HOPE YOU ARE FEELING BETTER! FOUND THIS CUTE PIC AND THOUGHT OF YOU- THE GREAT CHAMPION OF POUND DOGS- AND THE ONE TYPE OF DOG THAT ALWAYS GETS PICKED LAST: BLACK DOGS :-(
This is LEO. He is a dear sweet loving cat about a year old. He & his siblings were surrendered by their owners at man. cacc. All were adopted but Leo hard to believe. We got him out of the CACC & he is now at the aSPCA. so anyone who wants this mellow lovebug who likes to sit perched on your shoulder, get over there and give this boy a loving home!
Friends of Animals held a protest on one of the busiest days of the year for Carriage Horses in New York City with opposition from the carriage horse industry.
This was in today's New York Times.
If Tres and Friends could please make an anti-carriage horse comment on the New York Times comment page we'd really appreciate it.
Also, pls. see my blog for HORSENSE newsletter and to update yourself on this hot issue now. The horses really do suffer terribly here, we see it daily. It's not what tourists and people see. Time to end this cruel industry as other cities have.
Stopping by to say hi. Check out PINK's (PETA's) anti-carriage horse cruelty in NYC billboard 42nd St. Please check out my blog to on what more you can do! Please cross post to your friends. Thanks! xoxx
Hi there, I hope that you & your friends can help us here in NYC. Please read and re-post this:
What people are witnessing as always but especially during this busy holiday season is constant overwork of the horses. Horses going to troughs to drink and the troughs are empty, horses foaming at mouth, horses limping, one had a leg bandaged, stiff back legs and moving slowly, Drivers taking more than the 4 passengers allowed and the tired horses having difficulty pulling them, horses being left unattended at 1-2 a.m. illegally in Times Square traffic. Then there's the running of red lights, U-turns, drivers .. phones, whipping horses to go faster to make the lights or get the next fare (you can hear the switch hit the horses skin from blocks away), horses tripping en route in potholes on the street and falling to their knees, horses getting clipped by cars in traffic, horses spooked by ambulances, fire engines, noise etc. Once a witness saw a horse running without the driver in the carriage rapidly through red lights. The police eventually cornered him off after travelling about 20 city blocks in traffic! The stalls are small, filthy, prisons and there is NO turnout time. Then there is the increased traffic and population in the City and the horse deaths, injuries to horses and humans from accidents. Tourists & people do not realize this & the needs of a horse. f you are worried about where the horses will go if there is a ban, never fear, not ONE single horse will go to slaughter. We are working hard on celebrity sponsors and adopters and already have committments. NO HORSE will go to slaughter with a ban. However, without
And now? We can hardly wait for the release of your next cd.
Since we are truly excited and really looking forward to it, please don't make us wait any longer than we absolutely have to, to get our hands on it! :-)
Hugs to you dear Songbird! Thanks for sharing your gifted voice, with the world. xoxo Janice
Hey, how are you doing? I just had a choir concert last night, which was loads of fun (we did Mozart's "Te Deum"-- gorgeous! As well as an HMS Pinafore medley, and a really fun spiritual...), and afterwards all of the choir members met at a local restaurant, and I got to listen to two of our basses talk neuclear science & physics for most of the evening... lol! How's your new classical crossover album coming? I'm really looking foward to it! =D -Chantelle
Tell all your friends in CALIFORNIA to support AB1634!
It will help end California's severe animal overpopulation problem
so people spay and neuter their pets!
Well, I didn't win Junction City Idol on Saturday...
Here in Kansas, a Frank Sinatra song doesn't stand a chance against a Dolly Parton song (the girl who won sang "I Will Always Love You").
Oh well! I was really happy with my performance, and I can chalk it all up to experience! ;D
I've been selected as a finalist in a local competition, "Junction City Idol"!!
The performance will be April 28th, at the Junction City Business Expo at the Geary Country Convention Center (at the Courtyard by Marriot in Junction City, KS) at 3:00.
(I'll be singing the song I auditioned with: Frank Sinatra's "That's Life")
Thanks for adding me as a friend. Your music is amazing, and it's so nice for me, as an aspiring broadway soprano, to have an inspiration like you!
And how lucky are you to have worked with Leonard Bernstein?! I love Bernstein!! (Can't wait 'till my voice matures & I can sing "Glitter and be Gay" =D)
Tres, thank you for being a friend and more importantly, an advocate for the animls. I am proud to have you on my friends list and to be added to yours.
